[edit]Inherited from Middle French auvans, from Old French anvant (1180), from Gaulish *andebanno (“eaves, portico”) (compare Occitan ambans, Catalan envà), compound of ande (“intensive prefix”) (compare Welsh an-) + banno (“horn”) (compare Welsh ban), ultimately from Proto-Celtic *an- + *bandā.
