Etymology

From areo- (Mars) +‎ -oid (like). From Ancient Greek Ἄρης (Árēs, Ares), the Greek God of War, equivalent to the Roman God of War Mars (Mars), synonymous use for the Red Planet; and Ancient Greek -ειδής (-eidḗs, -oid) suffix. Coined in analogy to geoid, the equivalent for planet Earth.
