Etymology

From earlier *acrifoglio, from Latin acrifolium, from acer (bitter, sharp) + folium (leaf). Compare Catalan grèvol, Occitan grefuèlh, agrèvol, Franco-Provençal agriblon. Cf. also aquifolium, whence Spanish acebo, Portuguese azevinho.
