[edit]From earlier *acrifoglio, from Latin acrifolium, from acer (“bitter, sharp”) + folium (“leaf”). Compare Catalan grèvol, Occitan grefuèlh, agrèvol, Franco-Provençal agriblon. Cf. also aquifolium, whence Spanish acebo, Portuguese azevinho.
