[edit]From Middle High German rotz, roz, from Old High German roz, hroz, from Proto-West Germanic *hrott, *hrot, of imitative origin[1] or otherwise from Proto-Germanic *hrut(t)a-, from Proto-Indo-European *krut-nh₂-énti.[2]
Cognate with Old English hrot. Possibly related with Old High German hrūzan, Old English hrūtan (“to snore”). Compare also Ancient Greek κόρυζα (kóruza, “mucus”).
