[edit]From Pre-Germanic *ǵʰĺ̥h₃-to-m (“gold”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (“yellow; gleam; to shine”). Compare Proto-Slavic *zolto, Proto-Baltic *želtas, whence Latvian zelts.[1] Disputed relation to *geldaną (“to pay”).
