[edit]From the Proto-Indo-European root *h₁ey- common in many other river names, such as the Aller in Germany, Alaunus in some Celtic sites, and the Ille in Brittany. See also French aller (“to go”), German eilen (“to hasten, hurry”), Swedish ila.
