From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *təŋaq with *gi- prefix (c.f. Cebuano gi-). Compare Ilocano tengnga (middle), Kapampangan pitna (halve), Bikol Central tanga (between), Cebuano tunga (half, middle, center), Waray-Waray butnga (middle), and Malay tengah (mid, amid).
