Lithuanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Cognate with Latvian sāpēt (to hurt), of unknown further origin. The supposed reconstructed root, Proto-Indo-European *seh₂p-, appears to have no cognates in other branches.[1] There is a semantic and vague phonetic resemblance to Hittite [script needed] (kappilae-ᶻᶦ, to pick a fight), the latter which is probably from a Proto-Indo-European *ḱep- (to curse, fight) and cognate with Sanskrit शप् (śap, to curse, swear), though the shift from *ḱ > s would have to be explained, if related.
