German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Low Franconian and Low German dialects along the Dutch border, which it entered (before 1930) from Dutch fiets, perhaps partly through Dutch Low Saxon fietse. Further origin uncertain. In an alternative theory, the direction of derivation went the other way. See the Dutch etymology.
