[edit]From Middle High German tunne, from Old High German tunna, from Proto-West Germanic *tunnā (“tun”). A chiefly northern (i.e. Central German) word, later reinforced by Middle Low German tunne, tonne and, in the sense “metric ton”, by French tonne.
