Known bugs

(copied across from Wikipedia PHP script)

  • The parser (to convert the source text into readable stuff) is very basic. I am currently rewriting it.
  • Currently, no way to convert wikipedia to MySQL automatically.
  • (AxelBoldt 2002/01/26) The conversion script apparently used the character α instead of the HTML entity α, and similar for several other entities. This can be seen when editing recently converted articles, for instance the list of special characters in How does one edit a page. This is undesirable for two reasons:
    • the person editing may not know how to generate these characters.
    • when cutting the article out of the edit window, pasting into a text editor, editing there, and pasting back, (which I presume many people do), the α will be lost and be silently replaced by a question mark or some other nonsensical symbol.

Magnus Manske is the author of the basic script here. Other programmers are strongly urged to get involved. Some discussion of the script and requirements are ongoing on Wikipedia-L.

Run-of-the-mill internal Wikepedia links urgently need to be changed from the format

http://www.wikipedia.com/wiki.phtml?title=English_language

to (at the very least)

http://www.wikipedia.com/wiki/English_language (which currently works)

otherwise search engines will not follow these links, and Wikipedia's Google PageRank, and hence traffic, may drop drastically.
