Welcome!

Hello John D. Croft, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Hello, John. I am interested in the two articles you have started: Proto-Euphratean (talk · history · watch) and Proto-Afro-Asiatic (talk · history · watch). You are obviously writing from a pro-Nostratic point of view. However, Wikipedia is a community-built encyclopaedia in which many points of view are presented. Overall, we strive for a neutral point of view (please read), and try to back up our writing with sources, the corollary of which is no original research (please read). You may also want to read the manual of style, as this suggests how best to format articles. Some of your work so far has been labelled as problematic in one of these ways. This is quite common for newcomers: these labels are as much for the community as for you. Make use of the talk pages associated with each article to engage in discussion on the topic. Doing this often helps editors work together to improve articles. Feel free to ask me a question on my talk page. --Gareth Hughes 17:11, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Noongar

[edit]

Hi John,

Thanks for your comments and contributions at Yagan, Noongar classification, Perth, Western Australia and Talk:Swan River Colony. Certainly you are right that there is a systemic bias towards the white colonial perspective of Western Australian history. I'm sure no-one intends to present a racist history, but that's what ends up happening because so few contributors understand indigenous culture and social structure.

I'm a pretty good example of this problem; when I was writing Yagan I tried to present a balanced view, and I tried to provide important cultural information such as Yagan's tribe and classification, but I simply don't understand it all well enough to write about it properly. Hence the second rate attempt at Noongar classification, and hence [edits like this].

Dear Drew

I am a very recent Wikipedia entrant and my skills are still fairly elementary. Looking at your excallent Yagan article shows me that your skills are of a high order. I still don't understand the nature of Wikipedia's policies regarding images, nor the technique for incorporating images into the text, and would appreciate any help on this I can get.

I would also appreciate help on the articles of Whadjuk and Pindjarup that I have recently written and uploaded.

Regards John D. Croft 22:35, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have recently added information regarding ice ages to the timeline of evolution article. Could you please provide a reference for that information? If your source is a book, could you also provide a brief quote from the book, to confirm the information (as per the other references on that page)? Thank you. -- Ec5618 10:12, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried adding the references but failed, as I am only a starter and don't understand the referencing format you have used.
They are
  • John, Brian (Ed)(1979) "The Winters of the World: Earth under the Ice Ages" Jacaranda Press ISBN 047026844-1 presents the evidence for the Huronian Ice Age.
  • Walker, Gabrielle, (2003) "Snowball Earth: The Story of the Great Global Catastrophe that Spawned Life as we know it" Bloomsbury ISBN 0747654337 Parameter error in {{ISBN}}: checksum, presents the evidence for the "Runaway Ice House theory.
Could you insert them for me
Many thanks
John D. Croft 11:20, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the references. Could you please provide a quote from each book? Ideally, I'd like to include a quote from "The Winters of the World" in which the Huronian Ice Age is concluded to be real (along the lines of "from all this, we can conclude that some 2500MYa, the Earth was in the middle of an Ice age"), and a quote from "Snowball Earth" in which the concept of Ice house effect is summarised (possibly from the back cover, along the lines of "The ice house effect was the result of rampant oxygen production, which destroyed most of the methane in the atmosphere, and caused the global temperature to drop dramatically"). Again, thank you. -- Ec5618 11:45, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am currently at work and under a fair bit of pressure (and don't have access to my reference library here) so I am unable to comply with your request at the moment. Thank you again for your help.

No problem. We have time. Thanks. -- Ec5618 08:42, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John, A lot of your edits to the Galaxy article look good, but it's really hard to follow when you make dozens of edits each day. Please try to make just a few major edits so that others who have the article on their watchlists can keep track of what's going on.

Also, I'm concerned about the non-scientific tone of some of the edits. Particularly, I don't think it's appropriate to have a section on "life in galaxies". Life lives on planets, which happen to be in galaxies, but I don't see a strong connection between the two. -- Xerxes 15:46, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate all the work you've put in to this - but can you explain the logic behind your most recent change. As far as I understand the literature, there's no evidence for more than one central black hole in the Milky Way Chrislintott 06:41, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, John!

Great recent edits here. I hope more able editors like you will contribute to this article. I just now added a short phrase identifying Yaw with Chaos (mythology) further down (in paragraph two). Also, I think that Yam and Nahar should be specified as "bynames", a fact made clear in the excerpts from the Baal Cycle. What do you think?

  - C. dentata 20:21, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great Castanea dentata, I like your edits. What about an earlier section though. Giovanni Pettinato at Ebla identified an earlier Yah phase appearance at Ebla associated with the reign of Ebrum there (see my post on the discussion page). Bottero and others have identified this with the extension of Akkadian Ea into northern Iraq and Syria under Sargon of Akkad. I would like to include this on your discussion of Levantine Yaw. What are your thoughts.
John D. Croft 00:23, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I enthusiastically agree. I think this will call for a new section. To do that, though, we will need to gather some reputable sources. You are welcome to start. I hope to run down to the uni. library at some point when I have time...  - C. dentata 01:56, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bias

[edit]

Hi John,

I'm all for countering the systemic bias in Wikipedia by providing better coverage of Aboriginal culture and history, so I think your knowledge and appreciation of these issues could be of enormous benefit to Wikipedia. But I must say some of your edits are unencyclopaedic in their bias. If you're going to write obviously POV statements like "Stirling's vindictive vengeful policies", it would be better if you didn't edit the articles at all. Can we try to keep it neutral and verifiable please? User:Hesperian 22:13, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Gathering facts to support your position is original research, which does not belong on Wikipedia, even if you are right. The only appropriate way to support your position on Wikipedia is to gather references. Your statement that Stirling had vindictive vengeful policies is only verifiable if the majority of reputable sources clearly agree that Stirling had vindictive vengeful policies. A very brief look at my biography of Stirling by Statham indicates that Statham, for one, would not agree with your position. You need to refactor your statements to neutrally communicate all points of view, rather than propounding your own. User:Hesperian 07:20, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell the original source of the image was this press release it is available in super high resolution here. I can't find anything stating what the copyrigth of the image is. Maybe you could contact Gill Ormrod who's email is on the press release and ask about the copyright status. Failing that it is probably OK to use the fair use boilerplate {{Promophoto}} on it. --Martyman-(talk) 07:53, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
this site is in the image page as being the source, and it mentions credit to Gemini, if that helps. - cohesiontalk 07:57, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lahm has been proposed for deletion. Is there any information that can be added to this article? If not, it makes more sense to simply include this information in a related article and make Lahm a redirect to that article. If there's more to be said about Lahm, please add some information to the article or explain your plans on the talk page. Also, definitely include some sources to comply with WP:V. If you feel you've made your case for keeping the article, go ahead and remove the "prod" notice to stop the deletion process. NickelShoe 06:37, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Western Australia

[edit]

Hello John. I reverted your added statement in the Western Australia article claiming that Perth is nearer to Singapore than to Sydney. As I checked in Great Circle Mapper, Perth-Singapore is 2420 miles, while Perth-Sydney is 2041 miles. Clearly then, Sydney is still nearer to Perth. I did reword the sentence so the idea that Perth is quite isolated in that respect is still there. Elektrik Blue 82 00:51, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'd like to thank you for your work on these articles, which is greatly improving their quality.

I hope this does not seem impertinent, but I wonder if I could ask you to give more complete citations in your edits. For instance, when you're quoting ancient sources, it would be very helpful to give the author, the work, and the location of the passage (book/line numbers for poetry, book/paragraph numbers for prose, or other standard reference system). Similarly, when you mention facts derived from modern scholarship, please cite author, work, page number. For instance, you've brought Lisa Maurizio's work into the article, which is a great thing, but it would be even better to have specific page numbers to look at to verify the information.

Again, I hope that my comment does not seem rude or offensive, because your edits are taking the articles in a much better direction. --Akhilleus (talk) 06:13, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Uruk.jpeg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Uruk.jpeg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Sustainability

[edit]

Hi John, I noticed your contribution of the emergy table to the sustainability page. Because emergy has not yet gained universal acceptance some view the method and nomenclature with suspiscion. Because of this it is important to include as much referencing to published literature as possible. If you could provide references to the formulas and the table in the sustainability article that would be terrific. On another matter, have you performed any emergy audits to evaluate the sustainability of a region or entity? I'd be interested to have further contact with you on this. Please let me know. Cheers, Sholto Maud 10:09, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, John... As a result of noticing the work you've done on the Sustainability page, and then scanning through your User page, I thought I'd leave a message.
I recently left a message at the Talk:Fishery page concerning the inadequacy of the current Fishery article as regards any detail concerning the degradation of the ocean fisheries of the world. (Unfortunately, I realized, I had not logged in when I left my recent message requesting more information be added concerning impacts on "the noble fishes" (large, choice species such as cod, halibut, tuna, salmon).
It isn't that I think this (fisheries) is a special focus of yours or a special interest of yours, but I thought you might be in touch with some persons who may know something about this topic and might be willing to expand the Fishery article. Please pass this request on, if you would, to someone who can help out, if you know anyone. Thanks. Joel Russ
John, you wrote on my "Talk" page: "Hi Joel. Regarding sustainable fisheries, there are few good examples in the world to point to and industrial fishing, with sein purse nets and long-lines are particularly damaging to the environment. The Australian government has been particularly concerned with the poaching of Patagonian tooth fish (see article at http://www.aad.gov.au/default.asp?casid=11981) and also with the taking of sharks fins, trochus shells and beche la mer (Sea cucumbers) by Indonesian craft, operating for Chinese syndicates in the north."
Like myself, I believe you are very concerned to put positive sustainability ideas 'out there'... however, with respect to fisheries the news at present is mostly bad. But, still, the fact is not conveyed well (that is, in any detail whatsoever) in the Fishery article - which is why I wrote to you. Do you think we can find someone who can add a bit of useful detail? Afterall, Wikipedia is much used by secondary-school and college/university students as a first resource on many topics; they are the future, so they should be learning something about this vital dimension of the fisheries topic.
Best, Joel

r/K selection theory

[edit]

Hi there. I've just been looking at your recent edits to the r/K selection theory article. I'm afraid that I'm not convinced that they help articulate the general theory. It seems to me that the concepts of r/K are used in Adaptive Capacity analogously to how they are used in ecology. Certainly the current reference to adaptive capacity is unclear and confusing (it also needs copyediting). It might be better to move the adaptive capacity material to a "See also" point. Not least because explaining the relevance of r/K for adaptive capacity might be best done there (I notice that it's not at the moment). Cheers, --Plumbago 16:01, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is this is not copyrighted (On the one hand, it is old enough to be in the public domain, on the other hand, I doubt it was originally written in English) would it not be more suited to being in WikiSource, as is it is basically just the original text? J Milburn 14:05, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I thought it unlikely that it was a copyright violation, but what you have written isn't an encyclopedia article, it is the story in modern English. J Milburn 14:50, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
More appropriate than just copying out the source text would be to move the source text to WikiSource, and to talk about the significance of the text. Remember to reference what you say, take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction) and check this. Both of them talk about what I have said in more detail, with examples. Drop me a line if I can be of any help. J Milburn 14:58, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The best way to make the article relevent to Wikipedia would be to have a read of Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction). That talks about what to include, and how to include it. Remember to source everything you say! J Milburn 15:45, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome John, sorry I didn't get back to you. I'm glad you solved the problem. I intend to simplify the participants section, editing a page is something I found a bit mystifying when I started at wikipedia. This was only recently, so I can only offer basic assistance and good advice I have received. Such as, "swipe from others", copy the code you find on pages here - even user pages (not mine!). Check out the talk pages of others, for example at our WP:WA. A quick glance at your contributions shows you have been busy. Your contributions at nyungar related pages would be more than the regular 'two cents', have a look at them if interested your 40 000 'ceiling' comments were helpful to me. You obviously have a book or magazine on him. With kind Regards, Leoboudv 23:24, 11 February 2007 (UTC) Thanks for editing out the nonsense on Seti II. Its good to know someone pays attention to historicity here! BTW, if you have any cited info on Paneb, pls feel free to add a reference to it. Your addition to this article is very interesting, but it may be removed if it is not supported by a reference. Could you hunt something up? History isn't really my area of expertise. TimVickers 19:01, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User:WAS 4.250 has now removed that section, but if you add it back with a reference and phrased to make it clear this is discussing the early history of influenza, I'm sure there will be no problem. TimVickers 20:20, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dark Ages

[edit]

Sorry for the long reply. The reason I removed it was because the article is focused on the European Middle Ages, with Dark Ages (disambiguation) handling other so-called "dark ages". It's been a problem in the past with people using the article for all sorts of purposes and we are trying to keep it focused to the one topic. I'm afraid that paragraph is going to open a can of worms as people expand on it. -- Stbalbach 17:05, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, gotcha, sorry about the issue. FYI, there's a template somewhere (sorry, I don't have the link handy) that says something to the effect of 'This article is currently undergoing a major revision. Please do not edit it until this template is removed'. Alternatively, you could create a subpage of your userpage and use that as a sandbox. Again, sorry about that. Western European Dark Ages is a content fork and against the rules. -- Stbalbach 03:17, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

John, I understand what your trying to do, but it will just get reverted, you have not established consensus to rename Dark Ages to Western European Dark Ages - in fact there are considerable number of people against it - nor is there any consensus that Dark Ages should be a article about something besides Europe. In fact we already have a whole bunch of articles on Wikipedia that cover the topic you want to discuss. Finally, Dark Ages is most commonly used in relation to Europe, which is why it gets preference for the article title, per the Wikipedia rules on "most common usage" under article naming. I understand your point of view, but I'm not sure you fully understand the rules of how Wikipedia operates when there are disagreements. -- Stbalbach 03:31, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't mind, I propose to move the description back to "Ogyges", next to the relevant map. --Odysses () 12:36, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I noticed you had made several edits to A Study of History, so I'm hoping you will either know, or know who can, answer whether a particular edit was politically motivated and wrong. User:neomoon made some one-sided edits today, which shows they are "on one side" or the other of Korea vs. Japan. So their first edit to the article may have not been (cough) factually-based. A totally minor point, and I could probably safely revert it, but if you have certain knowledge that would be far better. Shenme 22:21, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

John, I really enjoyed this and congratulate you on putting together a very readable essay on a very tricky subject. I warn you though that the nature of this place is that it will be criticised for being too opinionated in a few places and from time-to-time taking an unencyclopaedic tone. For example: "Hopefully, in this first part of the 21st century Australians of non-Australian origins will at last be able to recognise both Aboriginal and white Australians as full brothers and sisters in the future of this country."; and "Understanding our landscape is dependent upon our understanding of the Aboriginal history of the people who made this landscape." Some quotations in inverted commas, eg. "biologically capable of having children, but not socially capable of raising them" really must have inline citations.

I hope that you will accept these as constructive criticisms and are prepared for some vandalism which this will no doubt attract. Regards —Moondyne 08:40, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! i do not set out to insult anyone. Please assume good faith. It basically is a very challenging article to start - I am going to slowly jump in every now and then seeing i personally knew most of the UWA and Curtin geography people of 20 years ago and more - there are many many issues that need to be nutted out - and it wont happen overnight - I am sure of that! [[User:JarrahTree] 05:48, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Actually reading your user page ( mine is impervious) - I realise we were probably around at the same time at UWA and crossed paths - we should have fun doing it (the article) just getting the big picture alone - is a challenge . oh well another day a few more words - cheers User:JarrahTree 06:35, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John. You describe the image as your own work using Powerpoint. Unfortunately, I don't think that that will stack up against the copyright experts here who will take a strict line in that the map is clearly based on a presumably copyrighted map previously published elsewhere. Hence it is a derivative work. Unless you genuinely are the creator of the base map (in which case you need to clearly state this on the image page), I am afraid that it'll need to be redone using a "free" base map. Some free maps of WA are at commons:Category:Maps of Western Australia and Category:Maps of Australia. A Köppen classification map for Australia has been done at Image:Australia-climate-map MJC01.png which could be cropped I suppose to show WA only. Sing out if you need a hand or more guidance. —Moondyne 07:23, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt it. The bottom line is that someone, somewhere owns the copyright to that old tourist map. And the Wikimedia Foundation has decreed that it will not publish copyrighted materials, including derivative works. Per US Copyright Office Circular 14: Derivative Works: "Only the owner of copyright in a work has the right to prepare, or to authorize someone else to create, a new version of that work." —Moondyne 08:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WHat a pain that is - i bet some lawyer somewhere has the high paid job in tracing impossible to find copyright holders SatuSuro 09:46, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright covers the expression of information, not the information itself. The geographical information in an old tourist map is not copyrightable; only the way in which that information is expressed is.

For example, the makers of that old tourist map had to decide upon a projection and coordinate system for them map. They had to decided whether or not to distinguish between different classes of road, and if so how. They had to decide which features to list and which not to. For roads, they had to choose between full, broken or dotted lines; they had to select a line thickness and a line colour. They had to do the same for railway lines and rivers. They had to select background shading colours for ocean, land and lakes. They had to decide upon icons for features such as bridges, hills, etc. They had to choose a typeface and font size for place names. All of these things represent creative decisions about how to represent geographic information, and all of them are copyrightable.

But the geographical information underlying the map is not copyrightable. If John extracted the geographical information from the map, e.g. by tracing it, but independently made his own decisions on colour schemes, font, iconography, etc, then the resultant creative work is his and his alone. I don't think that has happened here though; I think this map reuses the original map's iconography etcetera. So we have a problem.

Hesperian 11:28, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK Gents, leave it with me, I'll try to redraw the outlines and recreate the map - unforuntanely the way I have done my maps in the past have been using Powerpoint (the only map making package I have - if someone has a better system and was interested I'd gladly pass it over to them. It would be good if the new map includes the sites mentioned in the climatic texts. John D. Croft 23:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As one of the few regular watchers of the Civilization article, I wanted to discuss my changes with you directly. I'm slowly preparing a completely new version of the page with a more logical outline and more citations. Would you like to take a look at it so far? Right now it is little more than an outline with a few sections on their way to being fleshed out. It's at User:Fishal/Civilization. I've already put the new lead section into the article, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the rest of it, particularly the overall structure of the article. Fishal 19:39, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for the input. I'll add mythical civilizations to the outline right now. I'll add Axial Age to the "History" section. Or do you think it would better belong in the "theories" section? It's more a theory about a specific period in the history of civilization than a theory about the nature of civilization itself (like unilineal evolution, Marxism, diffusionism, etc). And one of the main things I'm trying to do is separate facts (definitions and uncontested archaeological evidence) from the big spectrum of theories. Currently it's all comingled in a very confusing fashion. Anyway, thank you very much for your help. Fishal 14:12, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Documentary Hypothesis (death thereof) and archaeology

[edit]

John, I've reverted your recent addition to the DH article, in which you wrote that the collapse of the DH consensus was lin ked in some way to archaeological discoveries (presumably post-Albrightean). I'm not aware of any reason for thinking there's a conenction - the challenge to the DH was entirely methodological so far as I know, with people questioing whether the use of distinct terms for God erally indicated distinct authors, etc etc. On the archaeological front, the 70s saw a revolution in archaeological theory which led to (or aided in the emergence of) minimalism, but Lemche et. al. were far from the only ones to question the DH - they were a distinct minority. So I'd link the fall of biblical archaeology to the rise of minimalism, but not to the demise of the DH or the re-emeergence of spllementary and framgmentary hypotheses. But if you have evidecne to support your view (or if I've misunderstood it), please let me know. Documentary Hypothesis

[edit]

Thanks for the speedy response John. Yes, your point is clear. But I'm nor sure it's relevant to the DH. The Dh relates specifically to the Pentateuch - defined in the broadest possible way, it's the idea that the five books are based on distinct source-documents, each complete in itself. Arguments about the Court History and the DtrH are therefore irrelevant.

There are some interesting recent studies about the DtrH, based on the canonisation process in Hellenistic times - the idea is to take the earliest written references to the texts and reconstruct their history from that. The basic premise, I guess, is that this is as close as we can get to the actual books involved without physical texts. I believe the resulting thesis is that the DtrH, as a collection of histories, dates from the 1st century BC - far later even than Hezekiah! Of course, this doesn't detract from the notion that the Court History may contain earlier material, but it does stress the idea that the CH is a hypothetical document. So, which of them you think the Phoenicians was? (i.e. Edomites, etc) Best--Gilisa 06:37, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John - just compared the current and earlier versions of this article. Sad to see this article now only contains the word "discrimination" once. I could imagine you would be mightily pissed off as to the fate of the aboriginal history article - deleting will not happen - it is a matter of working out - would you like to engage in any way about the resultant 3 articles? If so could you pleas email me so I can explain some of the issues that I do not wish to air here - otherwise my apologies for what has happened - but at least you have the opportunity - if you wish to engage further - either by email, at the article talk page, my talk page, or - otherwise what about a coffee sometime User:JarrahTree 01:30, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If that is the case 'that aboriginals use it' - in that form - it should be somewhere else - someone needs to start an off wiki blog or web site - or something like that is not an encyclopedia - as in that form it didnt conform to wikipedia standards and someone else would have probably been a lot more brutal than i - being an anthro student at uwa in the days of the berndts and basil s. The offer for a coffee is still open if you are in Perth - and I would prefer off wiki to explain the issues it would take too long to explain via email/etc especially if you are on the move soon - please email me at email this user on the talk page - cheers User:JarrahTree 03:23, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It would be very useful to know whether you were interested or not in such a meetup as it might be a good avenue to explain things I am not prepared to discuss on wikipedia talk pages - and explain the background to some issues without offending others - and also clarifying the madness behind the method - if you prefer not to - thats fine I would respect your sense of privacy ok - but the opportunity is there if you are interested. The article that you started with the above title has been nominated for WP:AFD, on the basis that it is WP:OR. However it looks to me as if you had sources for what you wrote. If you did, I would suggest that you immediately add them to the article. I have no strong view on its correctness and have not investigated how much has been added sicne you worked on it. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:02, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At this stage I have seen nothing that would make me change my vote for deletion. The vagueness of the statements ("seems to have referred") remains and the references added are also vague - not only are there no direct quotes, there aren't even page numbers. There's no evidence that any of the references refer to the phrase "Pillars of the Church", and as such this is essentially a coatrack article. Finally, many of these references strike me as dubious ("Key to Unlocking"... "Hidden History"...) and so adding them has created more problems than it solved. StAnselm (talk) 06:52, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the effort you're putting in - I just don't think it's worth it for this particular article. I mean, I disagree with the fundamental premise, that "pillars of the church" designated a particular group of people. There's no evidence that I can see that this was the case. StAnselm (talk) 07:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I already knew that. What I'm asking is whether Zarins places the Afro-Asiatic urheimat in the normal Ethiopia/Sudan, or in the Middle East. Community GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

[edit]

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Community and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left this message on your talk page since you have significantly edited the article (based on using this article history tool). Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix with the assistance of multiple editors. I have also left messages on the talk pages for other editors and related WikiProjects to spread the workload around some. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 05:06, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Carbon footprints image

[edit]

Hey, I noticed the image you made at the ecologic footprint-article. Nice work there btw. You may however want to take a look at the image I made at the carbon footprints page. Some noteworthy info on the pic and its description is given here aswell (which defies certain of the points you raised). Feel free to update the image if you want to (at present its hand drawn which doesn't look good. Perhaps the info at the image may give you some insight which you may mention to the Australian government or so. You may also take a look at my blog if you wish; see http://kvdp.blogspot.com

Dark Ages

[edit]

Dear Johh Croft - see comments below. Your discusiion was sensible and I wonder if you'd be willing to weigh in now and try to improve the situation at Dark Ages.

I have just read through 50 pages of Talk on Dark Ages, and it reveals a Wiki article that is in deep trouble. 29 people contributed comments complaining about the one-sided polemics against the term "Dark Ages." 7 people argued that to talk of the Dark Ages is invalid and that the article need only represent this one point of view -- but mostly the rejecttion of diverse views is the work of two people, stbalbach and Doric Loon. Loon compliments stbalbach for "assiduously maintainging and defending this article over the years," meaning, beating back all other contributors and defending their personal POV. They don't seem to be ashamed that during this time the artcle lost its status as a Good Article, way back in Mary 2006. Some defense! In the talk pages, stbalbach and Loon state openly that they consider the Dark Ages not dark, and that their opinion is the only valid one, and the only one that may be included. For ex, stbalbach: "Its impossible to defend the use of the term (Dark Ages) with what we now know." Any alternate, referenced quotes or information are undone and dismissed as not good references. This is Orwell's 1984 - some pigs are more equal than others. Marskell said it very well back in 2005, and its still true now in 2008: "It's disappointing to see revisionism has won out. 'the middle ages were not dark, therefore there can be no causes of darkness...you see stbalback beecoming a crusader...it is still possible to walk into a respectable university and hear the Dark Ages discussed...unfortunately readers of wikipedia won't be able to find out...." One poor user of Wiki wrote his frustration on teh talk page, that none of the information he was hoping for on The Dark AGes was here, just polemics. His complaint was trashed. This page is crying out for arbitration, to stop a small number of people from domineering and preventing balanced POV. It's time to rebel against the dictatorial rule of stbalbach and his henchwomen. I am fairly new to Wikipedia. Judging from stbalbach's page, he is very active - does that make him impregnable or is there something that can be done? There is really no point in trying as individuals to improve the article while he is in place as the self-appointed Dictator of Truth. Now is the time for concerned people to speak up. If you agree that stbalbach's reign of power should end, and the article should include references that support the term Dark Ages, and explain why, so as to have a balanced POV, please speak up now. More experienced Wikipedians - what can be done? --Cimicifugia (talk) 21:17, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Cimicifugia[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Genealogy of Later Mesopotamian Gods.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. —Remember the dot (talk) 22:03, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(replying to message on my talk page) - thanks for your message. There are a number of problems with this image:
  • You need to choose an actual license for the image, not just say that it's OK to use on Wikimedia. You can find a list of licenses commonly used in this situation at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#For image creators. I recommend {{cc-by-sa-3.0}}.
  • The image should have been uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons, not to Wikipedia. The Commons' upload form makes it pretty easy to upload your image and select a license for it at the same time, so you should consider reuploading it there.
  • The image was saved in JPEG format, which is not suitable for diagrams. As you can see, lines and text that should be crisp and clear are blurry because of this. SVG would be the most appropriate format for the image, but PNG is also very good and the existing JPEG is better than nothing.
I hope that helps clarify the issue - please let me know if there's anything else I can help explain. —Remember the dot (talk) 02:19, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If there is a target article you'd like to supply for this image, please post it here and I (or another admin) will be happy to restore it so that it can be put in the article. If you simply would like to have it restored so that you can retrieve a copy of it for your files, it can be temporarily un-deleted for such purposes as well. Whadjug map

[edit]

Thank you for your post, some time ago about the Whadjuk map. It would be difficult for anyone to have copywrite on this map as it was traced and then redrawn using Powerpoint polygons (hand-drawn by me) copying a public domain base map of Western Australia. I then added the colour of the Polygons and saved the file to a jpeg format before uploading it to Wikipedia. The publications I made use of for the sources was a 1979 150th Anniversary Atlas of Human Endeavour, produced by Western Australian Government Print, and a South Australian map produced by Tindale in the 1930s. To get the map restored can you help? Thany thanks. John D. Croft (talk) 18:04, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine. We had an email from an Australian government source claiming copyright in the map, but it was clear (from subsequent emails) that the map they claimed you copied was completely different from the one you used.
The map has not been deleted. Stifle (talk) 08:37, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Recent editing on Proto Semitic and Afroasiatic subjects

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for working on those articles. They need it. I reverted one edit, where you deleted all reference to a theory of Bernal. I write here in order to mention that I do not wish to argue the case for this theory and I am not a supporter of it. It is however a real theory and in fact a well known one, for better or worse. Bernal is not a specialist linguist, and of course he is controversial, but he is serious enough to be cited by Lionel Bender in a respectful but disagreeing way. I do not think we can delete such things from the record. In any case, please see the talkpage discussions that have already taken place. I think the aim has to be not to give the theory undue weight.--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 21:24, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification

[edit]

Thank you for noting possible improvements in my map, as I will change it shortly, but I did not understand what you meant by "Secondly the territories added by Sargon was the area you have shown byt the previous state was not the Akkadian Empire, but in fact the Empire of Lugalzagessi of Umma whose Empire Sargon took over. It was the states of Southern Iraq only and did not extend as far north as Nineveh." Please explain. --Interchange88 19:37, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Dragon Dreaming, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dragon Dreaming. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

[edit]

I reverted this [3] - since now the sentence (to me) made little sense, and seemed to reverse the meaning of the original sentence. Could you explain what the idea was? Its possible that it made the same statement as before, but just in a overly complex manner? --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 23:41, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Climate change denial as it is used in the article, is about disinformation campaigns created by people with a hidden financial interest in keeping the status quo. Where as your sentence seems to say that it is a campaign trying to show science as having hidden financial interests. (this wouldn't really be denial (imho)) - have i misunderstood? --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 23:45, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributed article, Composition of the Earth

[edit]

Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Composition of the Earth. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as yourself. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Earth. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Earth - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. -- Boing! said Zebedee 12:31, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed additions to Patriarchy article

[edit]

Hi John. I am very happy that you commented on the Patriarchy article. No one comments there--there is an editor who ran roughshod over the article for more than 2 years and he was finally banned for one year. This ends, I think, in June. I hope he didn't intimidate you and that you will work with me on any additions to the article. From what I have seen of him, he thinks the world should be more oppressive than it is, especially of women. He also makes veiled threats that sound Nazi-ish. You are brave to put your identity on your user page. I try to stay anonymous because of the hostility. Thanks again for your comment.--Hammy64000 (talk) 19:25, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, a few years ago there were wild, unourced claims in the article, which were deleted by me. Looking at it now, the article has grown back, with what seem to be unsourced, vthough not wild, claims. Would you say however, that the claims are at least true, or not?

"Little specific is known about the history of Kish before Sargon of Akkad, who came from the area. The Sumerian king list states that it was the first city to have kings following the deluge. It also names 40 kings of Kish spread over four dynasties. Of those, none earlier than Enmebaragesi has been attested by archaeological finds. The Third Dynasty of Kish is interesting in that it begins with the assumption to the monarchial power of "Big man" (Sumerian Lu = Man, Gal = Big) of a woman, previously a Tavern Kepper, Kubau, the only case in Mesopotamian History in which a woman has ruled in her own right. She was later Divinised as the goddess Kheba."
{The footnote "3" that comes a sentence or two later may verify the later sentences, but it it doesn't verify the text I've just quoted.} Thanks, Rich Peterson24.7.28.186 (talk) 10:52, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 05:39, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John, thanks for your reply. There are many problems with the article. If you respond to them immediately, I can give you some time before I delist it. However, the other thing I noted, which is more problematic, is that you were the one who promoted it to GA, even though GA rules strictly state that editors who are involved with the article cannot do that. Can you please respond to that? Maybe you acted in good faith, so that's why I did not put it in my review, but if there is no good answer to that, I will have to delist it right away. BTW, if you are interested, I can post some more relevant literature in which you might have a look. Just let me know. -- Zoeperkoe (talk) 14:35, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm concerned about edits such as {http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Proto-Semitic_language&diff=prev&oldid=416226693] which seem to be being made by this editor in a number of articles. Dougweller (talk) 17:39, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, there's obviously no problem and the one edit that concerned me was an error. Dougweller (talk) 06:37, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Eve

[edit]

Years ago you made some edits to the article on Eve, but a couple things are not clear. In the section on Gregory of Tours, it sounds as though you are quoting something, but it's not clear where the quote starts and ends or whom it is quoting. You do put quotes around "Male and female he created them and called their name Adam," as though it's a quote from the Bible, but it's not. Later, you added something about Adam cursing Eve, which didn't happen, so I'm wondering whether it's a mistake. Could you please clarify these points? Eric Kvaalen (talk) 12:27, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Goonininup requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. File:WAClimates.jpg listed for deletion

[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:WAClimates.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. You disputed that I created the map of Western Australian climates from Scratch using Powerpoint. This is possible - as powerpoint allows maps to be created - I have used it for many maps I have uploaded into the web. The maps are created using the polygon tool in powerpoint with the various colours created as overlays. As a powerpoint it is then saved as a jpeg file which I have then uploaded.
I hope this explains the method I have used. I would appreciate it if this satisfies you that you withdraw the map from deletion. John D. Croft (talk) 06:44, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I restored the map for the purpose of a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Files_for_deletion/2013_January_28#File:WAClimates.jpg. I think you may have misremembered this map, because I still believe that it is far too complex to have been created with the powerpoint polygon tool. Please comment at the deletion discussion if you have anything further to add! Calliopejen1 (talk) 23:17, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your question

[edit]

John, thank you for your time. I am happy to have the discussion in the right place.

My question is meant to be asking are there any other Origin belief systems? Or does anyone believe in something other than creation and evolution. Using the term "Creation" to mean God made it and "Evolution" to mean the common ancestry of all life.

I know what Darwinists teach about Creationists. I am a creationist. And a fundamental Christian. I believe the Bible is true. I also believe in gradual changes over time. I just don't think those changes can make the leap from say fish to frog. I understand that over generations dogs can change their spots (evolve). But I do not believe a reptile laid a bird egg. Nor that life sprung from the goo. Nor that the universe started from a laws of physics deifying, anti entropy having, Imaginary time big bang. Seriously google "Imaginary time" its what Hawking believes in over the Bible SMH.

Also so you know until proven by Columbus, Bible believers were the only people who believed the earth was round. Isaiah 40:21-22—“the circle of the earth.” Many Darwinists and anti-Christians are to eager to lie about what the Bible really says.

Again thanks John. And if you see or know where this discussion is happening, please let me know. --Kaptinavenger (talk) 04:58, 8 February 2015 (UTC) (I copied this from my talk page.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaptinavenger (talkcontribs)

What topics are off limits in science today because of their inherent connection to Biblical Principles?

[edit]

Mr. Croft. Thank you again for your well researched letter. I have been thinking on the topic of Science, and Scientists.

I suggest that Sin is not being taken seriously in science from most perspectives. Note Sin has about two lines of etymology, the rest is Religious study, not even etymologists like the word. The Topic is rather off limits to serious scientists, and I suggest this is because of its Bibllyness, though Sin cannot be denied. Not only in one definition, but in all that I can think of. Sin permiates through everyting I have seen to one digree or another, and is researched in few fields.

But how odd?! Truth is discussed or studied in almost every serious science. And Truth is misunderstood. All kinds of scientific theory's yet line number two of Truth clearly begins to cleverly discribe a Lie. Could there be more sin in Truth than there is in Sin?

I do love science, and still I believe in the Magic of Words.

If you get my meaning Sir. Again and again thank you for Your Time, I consider your gifts precious. --Kaptinavenger (talk) 10:35, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. while comparing Truth and Evolution I made an interesting observation, the science of Truth would suggest understanding the opposite of a thing is important to understand the reality of a thing. Hence a Lie being described on line two of Truth. Yet on Evolution , Devolution is not even a notion. --Kaptinavenger (talk) 11:24, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

John, do you mind if I ask, who is Mugwamp? Could I read some of Mugwamps writings? Thanks --Kaptinavenger (talk) 11:53, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A note on Pythagorus, there is a line there that says "(He) was the first person known to have taught the earth was spherical" yet the Author of Job was teaching about the chuwg before the Greek was born? The Hebrews had the first writings but the Greeks have the first teachers? --Kaptinavenger (talk) 12:57, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My science on this matter rather is pointing towards, the author of Job knowing not only trying to teach the roundness of the earth but also the creators affinity towards the tools of carpentry. I am filled with joy from the research you have inspired. --Kaptinavenger (talk) 13:09, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Gaia Foundation

[edit]

The article Gaia Foundation has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Organization with no sense of notability for Wikipedia.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi, John - Thanks so much! Yes, there has been quite a struggle at that article! The article is, as of today, open to editing again. One thing you could do is to take a look at my latest version, and possibly put the article back there, if you think the material is good and well-cited - no additions have been made at all in the days since, just subtractions (and all of that my material), and I am perfectly happy to have lots of work done by others on what I was doing with it, but have been bothered by the continuous and repeated removal of so much material that was obviously germane to the subject by a few editors.

Since I discovered that Toby Tyrrell himself removed all the Gaia material from the Wiki ESS entry, with a brief note calling it "irrelevant", I have felt that, instead of trying to hide this ESS-Gaia relationship like Tyrrell and others have been doing, there should be some more in-depth discussion of the interrelationship, with a full range of viewpoints given. I did some further study of my own, and was actually surprised at what I found..... very best, Terradactyl (talk) 16:54, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Mesopotamia may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. The other thing, as you havent archived your talk page for close to 10 years, I have changed some of the older user names earlier in your talk page, you really should archive for a cleaner page - cheers JarrahTree 14:01, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Last universal ancestor into Abiogenesis. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. — Diannaa (talk) 19:38, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sea Peoples and Atlantis

[edit]

Hi John, at Sea Peoples you wrote: "The theory was influenced by Plato's account of the Ατλάντειο, found in his books, the Critias and Timaeus (θάλασσοι = Thalassoi (= Sea People in Greek))."

I have removed it as there is no source. Please feel free to add it back with a source. It would be particularly helpful if the source could include a specific quote supporting the sentence.

Now it's just close paraphrase (some of that text is still identical to the source). I don't understand why, instead of copy-paste, you don't simply read the paper, then come back later and summarize it in your own words? That's the recommended practice. Copy pasting blocks of text into an article and then re-working it "just enough" is actually more trouble than it's worth because it tends to invite CV problems. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, John D. Croft. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Vanimo culture

[edit]

Hello John D. Croft,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Vanimo culture for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. scope_creep (talk) 16:46, 16 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John D. Croft, I think it was a redirect to the Vanimo language which is still existing. It had the following lines

==Vanimo Culture==

See Vanimo language

I flagged it up 3 days ago during page review, and I put a CSD A3 tag, as they was not content in it, apart form a single redirect and it was changed to a formal redirect with the same purpose: Vanimo culture.

Hope that helps. scope_creep (talk) 12:21, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Of long standing uncorrected and uncited material issues in the article what you are adding to, standard attention to WP:RS and WP:CITE would be much appreciated.

Also your talk page is getting difficult to negotiate ( 11 years plus on one page) - well worth trying to archive, or even ask help to archive JarrahTree 08:39, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for violating copyright policy by copying text or images into Wikipedia from another source without evidence of permission. You have been previously warned that this is against policy, but have persisted.

Please take this opportunity to ensure that you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to use non-free content, as you did at List of oracular statements from Delphi. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may request an unblock by first reading the guide to appealing blocks, then adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 19:41, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

John D. Croft (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I have been blocked from editing Wikipedia, in violation for using copyright material. I was unanware that the material was copyright and inserted, I felt proper referencing format for the material I inserted in good faith. I felt that the material inserted definitely added to the value of the article. It was claimed that I was previously warned that this was against Wikipecia policy but have been unaware of any previous copyright violation. If this had been brought to my attention I would have acted immediately to remove the offending material, as I try always to adhere to Wikipedia guides. If there is anything I can do to be restored as a bona fide Wikipedia contributer can you let me know. Yours faithfully John D. Croft (talk) 01:38, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

I'm not sure I understand your claims. You've certainly been previously warned; the word "copyright" appears on this page no less than one hundred and twenty-eight times, including the phrase "This is your final warning." Your claim that you were unaware that the material was in "copyright and inserted" makes no sense; your first edit in that series was a simple cut and paste from the source. You can't be unblocked until you acknowledge the problem and set suggestions on how your behavior will change. Kuru (talk) 02:20, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

I have been reviewing the behaviour for which I have been blocked. I wish to assert to all editors that the use of copywriten material will not occur again. It has always been my intention to improve the content of wikipedia is improved, as the many posts of appreciation from wikipedia editors shows. Regards to all, John D. Croft (talk) 21:25, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

In your previous unblock request you said "I was unanware (sic) that the material was copyright ...". Consequently we need much more than a bland assurance. You need to explain how the inserted material breached copyright and what steps you will take to ensure there are no further breaches of our copyright policy.
