Dr Mathura Lal Sharma (28 June 1896 – 1 April 1982) was the first recipient of the D.Litt. degree from Banaras Hindu University in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan state in India, as well as a renowned historian and prominent educator.

Academic career

Dr Sharma cleared the matriculation examination in 1916 from Allahabad University. In 1915 Dr Sharma was elected as Director of the Education Department, Rajasthan, introducing reforms such as making Sanskrit as compulsory subject.

As a self-taught student and while working as a teacher in Kota, Dr Sharma obtained his B.A. degree in 1923 from Allahabad University, majoring in English, Sanskrit, and History. In 1926, he passed the M.A. examination in History and Culture of Ancient India from Banaras Hindu University.

In 1932, he was appointed as a lecturer in Herbert College Kota, now known as Government Kota College.[1] From 1932 to 1936, he was associated with teaching and working continuously as a history lecturer

Dr Sharma worked as a court historian to write the history of Kota state on behalf of Maharao[[1]]. He was adorned with the role of a great historian by doing this work very well. From 1937 to 1941, Dr. Sharma worked as the secretary of His Highness for almost 5 years. He was appointed to this post on 1 September 1937.

His efficiency, ability and scholarship paved his way and in 1944 Dr Sharma was appointed Principal of Herbert College Kota (now Kota Government College). This college transitioned from an intermediate college to a degree college in 1945. Dr. Sharma was transferred to the post of Principal of Maharaja College, Jaipur in 1949 and he worked there until 1951.The Department of History & Indian Culture is the oldest Department in the University of Rajasthan founded in 1950 under the headship of Dr. M.L.Sharma.[[2]]

Dr Sharma kept climbing the ladder of progress and opened the doors of development with his ability and became the Director of the Education Department in 1951. He remained on this post till 1953. This was the golden period of his life, during which he made radical changes in education and made the Indian mother tongue Sanskrit a compulsory subject a part of the curriculum from class six to class eight. After retiring from this position, he still had an unwavering attachment to education, so he worked as a professor in Rajasthan University from 1953 to 1961 and was associated with the subject of history.

Keeping in view his indescribable achievements, in 1954 after G.S. Mahajan, he was made the work bearer Vice Chancellor of Rajasthan University. Not only this, he became the founding director of Rajasthan State Archives [[3]] . He continued to work on this post from 1953 to 1957. From 1936 to 1954, he also remained on the post of Superintendent of Archaeology Kota. He was also appointed as a member of the Senate, Syndicate, and Academic Council from 1949 to 1961.

He was also the founder and honorary director of the Rajasthan Institute of Historical Research.[4] Not only this, Dr. Sharma was a member of the Indian Historical Records Commission and the Indian History Congress from 1953 to 1956, the first president of the Rajasthan History Congress,[[5]] and the President of the Rajasthan Sanskrit Conference.[6] During the surveys between 1943 and 1954 ,Hundreds of sculptures and epigraphs were collected by Dr Mathura Lal Sharma which resulted into the establishment of the museum at Brijvillas mansion in 1945-46[[7]]. The museum was shifted to to the part of Hawaamahal of Kota Garch Palace in 1951.
