Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou better known as Vangelis (pronounced to rhyme with "angle" not "angel") was born on March 29, 1943 in Greece.

He is a new age music star and one of the most brilliant Electronic music composers. Although he has written several soundtracks in the last few decades and started composing when he was 4 years old, he is largely a self-taught musician and does not have substantial knowledge of reading or writing musical notation. Being a keyboard player in many Greek rock bands, including the legendary Aphrodite's Child alongside Demis Roussos, he began his solo career in the early 1970s. He is best known for his Oscar-winning score to the Chariots of Fire,1492: Conquest of Paradise and Blade Runner.

Some of his other famous works are: L'Apocalypse des Animaux, Heaven and Hell (which was the theme to the television series Cosmos), China, Antarctica, Voices and the Friends of Mr Cairo (with singer Jon Anderson of Yes).
