Franco Armani (born 16 October 1986) is an Argentine goalkeeper currently playing for Club Atlético River Plate of the Argentine Primera División.[1]

Career

Franco Armani left Deportivo Merlo in 2010 for Medellin giants Atletico Nacional. He stayed for 8 seasons and became their first choice goalkeeper. He was described as a hero to the Nacional fans, particularly being praised an effective and reliable shot-stopper.[2] Armani would go on to win thirteen trophies with El Verde, including the Copa Libertadores - South America's Champions League - against Independiente del Valle in 2016.[3]

In 2018 River Plate paid his buy out clause to bring him back to Argentina, a reported $3,000,000.[4]

For River Plate he won man of the match as they triumphed in the Supercopa Argentina with a 2-0 victory over arch rivals Boca Juniors. The man of the match prize was sponsored by fast food giant Burger King and Armani was literally ‘crowned’ on the pitch after the game.[5]

International

Armani married a Colombian and applied for citizenship.[6] Colombia were reportedly interested in naturalising Armani so that he could play for their national team. Armani however wished to return to Argentina to press his case for a World Cup berth with the nation of his birth.[7] First choice goalkeeper in Argentina’s qualifying campaign Sergio Romero is not a first choice starter at his club, Manchester United and Armani has impressed for River being described by Olé (sports newspaper) as a goalkeeper that wins matches.[8]

In May 2018 he was named in Argentina’s preliminary 35 man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.[9]
