Darmawan Tuah PURBA(lahir Juli 15,1984) adalah seorang Diplomat karir pada Kementerian Luar Negeri Republik Indonesia sejak tahun 2009. Sebelum berkarir sebagai PNS Diplomat, putra Simalungun kelahiran 15 Juli 1984 ini merupakan seorang Advokat dan Praktisi Hukum dengan spesialisasi Hukum Perdata untuk perkara-perkara sipil, dagang, ekonomi, dan perdata internasional. Berasal dari keluarga yang menjadi abdi negara sejak turun-temurun menjadi latar belakang Darmawan Tuah Purba untuk alih profesi dari seorang Advokat profesional menjadi seprang Diplomat. Darmawan mengungkapkan bahwa di dalam keluarga besar Purba, sehebat dan semakmur apapun kita menjalankan profesi di sektor swasta, kalau bukan berstatus senagai abdi negara yang saat ini disebut Aparatur Sipil Negara (ASN), orang tua belum merasa anaknya sebagai anak yang sukses.

Darmawan Tuah Purba lahir dan tumbuh dewasa di sebuah tempat terpencil yaitu di Kuala Dasal, Tanjung Jabung Barat, Provinsi Jambi. Saat itu masih masuk kategori IDT ( Inpres Desa Tertinggal) karena mengikuti orang tua di mana Ayahnya merupakan PNS yang ditempatkan di daerah tedsebut. Berada di komunitas yang beragam suku bangsa serta menjadi satu-satunya keluarga penganut Kristen telah menumbuhkan kedewasaan dalam hal saling hormat-menghormati antarpenganut agama dan kepercayaan yang berbeda serta membuatnya menguasai banyak bahasa Daerah seperti: bahasa Sunda, Jawa, Banjar, Minang, Melayu Jambi, Batak Toba, dan Simalungun. Disamping itu Darmawan juga banyak belajar tentang pendidikan agama Islam karena di masa itu, wajib mengukuti mata pelajaran muatan lokal (mulok) yaitu Iqro.

Masa kecil yang diasah oleh orang tua untuk hidup disiplin, berdagang, dan mengelola perkebunan kelapa sawit telah menjadi faktor yang mempengaruhi cita-cita Darmawan Purba untuk menjadi pengusaha. Akan tetapi, cita-cita tersebut berubah sejak orang tua Darmawan Purba mengirimkannya untuk menimba ilmu di bangku Sekolah Menengah Umum di kota Pematangsiantar dengan alasan orang tua agar bisa berbahasa Batak, mandiri, dan lebih disiplin, serta berani. Alhasil Darmawan berhasik menyelesaikan pendidikan SMU/SMA di SMA Negeri 1 Kota Pematamgsiantar pada tahun 2002.

Hingga menyelesaikan kuliah di perguruan tinggi pada Fakultas Hukum Universitas Sumatera Utara pada tahun 2007, Darmawan Purba tidak pernah memiliki cita-cita untuk menjadi Diplomat. Dia beliau hanya tertarik tinggal di kota Medan dan bekerja di perusahaan yang memiliki gedung kantor yang bagus. Namun tuntutan orang tua dan lingkungan tempat ia indekost di Jl. Berdikari 2, Pasar 1, Padang Bulan-Medan telah membuatnya dibawah tekanan sehingga harus meninggalkan Kota Medan untuk merantau ke Jakarta pada tahun 2007.

Sambil bekerja sebagai advokat di Jakarta, Darmawan tetap ingat nasehat orang tua, terutama almarhum ayahnya yang meninggal di saat beliau hendak lulus SMA. Oleh karena itu Darmawan mendaftarkan diri sebagai peserta tes CPNS Departemen Luar Negeri di tahun 2007 akan tetapi pada tes CPNS yang kedua yaitu 2008 baru lulus dan diterima menjadi Diplomat pada Kementerian Luar Negeri RI.

Swiss merupakan negara pertama yang sangat berkesan bagi Darmawan Purba sekaligus tidak terlupakan karena di negara tersebutlah Darmawan Purba bekerja dengan status sebagai Diplomat yang menjalankan misi Pemerintah Indonesia mulai tahun 2009-2010.

Selama Berkarir di Kementerian Luar Negeri, Darmawan Purba tetap berkarya di bidang hukum menjadi litigator yang berperkara di lembaga Peradilan serta bertindak mewakili Pemerintah Republik Indonesia baik di dalam maupun di luar negeri. Selain itu juga menyusun produk-produk hukum, pandangan hukum, dan solusi penanganan sengketa perdata antarnegara serta pelindungan WNI di luar negeri yang masih sejalan dengan latarbelakang spesialisasi di bidang Hukum Perdata Internasional.

Sheff is originally from Boston, Massachusetts.[1] His family is of Russian Jewish descent.[2] He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley.[1]

Career

Sheff, a journalist, wrote articles and conducted interviews for The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Playboy, Wired, Fortune, and NPR's All Things Considered. His interview subjects have included John Lennon, Frank Zappa, Steve Jobs, Ai Weiwei, Keith Haring, David Hockney, Jack Nicholson, Ted Taylor, Carl Sagan, Betty Friedan, Barney Frank, and Fareed Zakaria, among others.

He has also been an editor of New West, California, and other magazines.[1]

Beautiful Boy was based on Sheff's article, "My Addicted Son", that first appeared in The New York Times Magazine.[3] In addition to Beautiful Boy, Sheff wrote the books Game Over, Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America's Greatest Crisis,[4] China Dawn, and All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

In January 2019, High: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs, Alcohol, and Addiction was published. A resource for middle school readers offering clear, direct information about the realities of drugs and alcohol, it is Sheff and his son Nic's first collaborative project.[5]

In 2019, Sheff founded the Beautiful Boy Fund, a charity devoted to making quality, evidence-based treatment for substance-use disorder accessible to those in need of treatment, and identifying and supporting research to further the field of addiction medicine.

Honors and awards

In 2009, Sheff was included in Time magazine's Time 100 and on the magazine's World's Most Influential People list.[6] Beautiful Boy won the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award for nonfiction[7] and was one Amazon's Best Books of the Year in 2008.

He received media awards from College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD), American Society of Addiction Medicine, the Partnership for Drug-free Kids, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP), American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), and was the first recipient of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) Arts and Literature Award.[citation needed]

Views on addiction

Sheff educates about addiction as a brain disease and is an advocate for putting addicts into therapy programs early.[8][9]

He believes life stresses and traumas are risk factors, and that therapy for these can help addiction prevention.[9][10] He is an advocate of life skills training to aid addiction prevention.[11][12]

Personal life

Sheff lives in Northern California with his wife, Karen Barbour, an artist, illustrator, and author of children's books. He has three children: Nic, Jasper, and Daisy Sheff. Nic Sheff, who has also written a memoir recounting his years of addiction in the book Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, is a writer for television and film.[13] Jasper Sheff is a Grammy Award-nominated[14] musician who has cowritten and produced songs[15] for Lil Nas X, Elton John,[16] Halsey and XXXTentacion. Daisy Sheff is an artist whose paintings have been exhibited at White Columns Gallery,[17] Ratio 3, Clearing Gallery,[18] Grimm Gallery[19] and elsewhere.

In 2018, Felix van Groeningen adapted Sheff's book Beautiful Boy into a feature film of the same name. In the film, Sheff is portrayed by Steve Carell, with Timothée Chalamet as his son, Nic. Actress Maura Tierney portrays David's wife, artist Karen Barbour, and Amy Ryan plays Nic's mother, Vicki.[20]
