C.V.U.A training Me
So will you train me to fight against vandalism? I am new to vandalism fighting and I can a bit of some help. I am a new user and I have read over most policies. IlluminatingTrooper (talk) 06:11, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi IlluminatingTrooper, thanks for reaching out. I've recently taken on a couple of new students, and am not sure that I would be able to find time for another one right at the moment; having said that, one of them is progressing quite quickly, and it might not be too long until they graduate. From a quick look at your contributions, it looks like you've already started using Twinkle to clean up vandalism - my advice at the moment would be to give WP:Twinkle and WP:Vandalism another careful read-through, build up some more experience using the 'Recent changes', and hopefully I'll be in a position to start taking you through the course in the near future (maybe in the next couple of weeks?). Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 06:58, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi IlluminatingTrooper - I've graduated one of my students, and I've marked another as inactive since they haven't edited for a few weeks, so I think I've got some space to pick this up if you're still interested. I see that you were granted Rollback recently, so you have obviously already picked up a good amount of experience in this area - let me know if you still want to go through the course. New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019
Hello Girth Summit,
- Backlog
Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.
- Coordinator
A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.
- This month's refresher course
Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.
- Deletion tags
Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.
- Paid editing
Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.
- Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
- Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
- Not English
- A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
- Tools
Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.
Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.
Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.
DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Thanks for your help!
I'm still learning how to create wiki pages and appreciate your feedback. I'll look for additional independent sources for the podcast page I tried to create. It is slowly gaining recognition and press so I may have to wait until there are more reputable articles written before I finalize and submit the page for publishing. Thanks for your assistance as I learn the ropes! KnowledgeGoddessDC (talk) 17:06, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- KnowledgeGoddessDC, no problem, you're welcome! I'm so glad you weren't upset - not everyone takes well to having their articles draftified, but it's sometimes the best option when there is good content there, but the sources don't quite support notability yet. A couple more decent-length reviews in reliable sources would probably swing it - do drop me a note if you add them and I'll be happy to take a look. Welcome to Wikipedia by the way! GirthSummit (blether) 17:09, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
Wanted to call your attention to [article] again to see if the sources indicate notability. Here are the top 3 sources. 1. The Washington Post - 5 Dating App Mistakes You're Probably Making According to the Hosts of U Up 2. Chicago Tribune - The ‘U Up?’ podcast duo is coming to Chicago — with no-nonsense advice for dating in the city 3. E Online - Listen Up, Gigi Hadid: This Is What Tyler Cameron Is Looking For in a Partner
Thanks for your help and advice! KnowledgeGoddessDC (talk) 17:51, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- KnowledgeGoddessDC, hi again. It would be worth taking a look at WP:INTERVIEWS - it's an essay which discusses the use of interviews when weighing notability. The Washington Post and the E Online pieces aren't quite ideal because of this, since they're both essentially just interviews with the presenters of the podcast, so are largely primary and dependent. I can't see the Chicago Tribune source because of my geographical location (a lot of US media sources block UK IP addresses because they're not compliant with our GDPR laws), so I can't assess that one - if it gives significant coverage to the podcast itself (rather than just the hosts), and it's not an interview, then it's probably a good notability indicator, since it's a very reliable publication. Are IPs permitted to blank their own talk pages?
An IP blanked a warning I gave them regarding disruptive editing... James-the-Charizard (talk) 20:35, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- James-the-Charizard, hi James, in general, users are allowed to remove material from their own talk page, and I'm not aware of any guideline that distinguishes between registered accounts and IPs in this respect. It does not mean that the warning doesn't stand though - indeed, it's usually seen as a confirmation that they have read and understood the warning. If they continue to be disruptive, escalate the warnings as you would if they were still on the talk page, and report to AIV if necessary - any investigating admin will look at the page history, not just the page itself. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 21:14, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
NPP training
Hey Girth, it's been a pleasure to work with you in CVUA and the course was very enjoyable and helpful. Now since I have graduated from CVUA, I was thinking of a NPP training. Should I ask Barkeep49?Andrew Base (talk) 12:00, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base So, this is up to you really. Personally, my advice to you would be to carry on with the counter vandalism work and spend a bit of time getting experienced with Stiki and Huggle, while also learning about how everything works on the site. You might think about doing some content creation - it's fun, and there are plenty of subjects that don't have articles about them yet - I tend to write articles about notable buildings, since that's a subject that interests me and there are hundreds of listed buildings in the UK that don't have articles. Familiarity with how articles are written, our with rules around sourcing and notability, and also with how discussions at AfD work, would all be useful to you if you decide to get into page curation via NPP. When you feel you're ready, by all means apply for some training at NPP school. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 12:08, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Fine Girth, I will check out Huggle and Stiki.Andrew Base (talk) 12:10, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Roger Norris-Green (author)
Regarding my article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Roger_Green_(author): I'm really surprised that the significance of the person is being questioned. This is author who has written 140 books during the 60 years and sold millions worldwide, translated into many languages like Swedish and Finnish (my country). So isn't this notable article? Well, now I added two more references on my article, as requested (book review and The Sydney Morning Herald). I hope that references enough. Or is it so that nothing is good enough? I'm lost, if this not good. Please help me, if necessary. September 14, 2019 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gari_Jugarin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gari Jugarin (talk • contribs) 15:26, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- Gari Jugarin, hi. Please take a look at our notability guidelines, especially WP:GNG and WP:NAUTHOR. From what I can see, the sources you've added are a review on a blog (not reliable), and an entry on a database (not significant coverage). What you want are sources that are reliable, independent and give significant coverage. There don't have to be many - two would probably be enough - but I'm not seeing any yet that tick all the right boxes. I'll leave it for another editor to review, but to be honest I would not pass it at present, based on the strength of the current sourcing, sorry. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 18:06, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- Gari Jugarin I owe you an apology - I missed the Sydney Morning Herald article. That might be a suitable source, but without a URL I can't access it to confirm. If there is an online copy, that would help reviewers out - as I said, I'll leave it now for another to review. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 18:45, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Yes, there are some strong sourches (the book named "Sold by the Millions: Australia’s Bestsellers" and the Sydney Morning Herald article). Besides, I added two more references now, another is Yorke Peninsula Country Times article. I hope these are good enough, because I'm done. I can not do better or more than this. Kindly, Gari Jugarin September 14, 2019 —Preceding undated comment added 19:05, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- Gari Jugarin, thanks for adding a link to the Sydney Morning Herald article - unfortunately, unless I've missed something, it doesn't mention this author anywhere. The Peninsula County Times article is just a couple of sentences saying he will be attending a book signing - that's not significant coverage. I can't comment on the Australian Bestsellers source, since I can't access it, but if it's just an inclusion in a list then it wouldn't help - again, what we want is significant coverage of this particular person, or their work, in reliable, independent media. I hope you are able to find it, I have no interest in stopping you publish this article, but it needs to demonstrate notability according to our guidelines. Good luck. Oliver Maloba
Hi,
I created the page Oliver Maloba which you proposed for deletion - and it was later deleted! Originally it did not have references which I later added but seems it was too late.
Help out please - putting up a page takes hours. You must know a lot more than I do on this streetsTipkorir (talk) 05:29, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Tipkorir, we have a strict policy that no biographical article of a living person is permitted to exist without sources. I can no longer see the article, so I can't comment on the history here, but if you contact the admin who deleted it they may be willing to email you the text for you to recreate with sourcing.
- If you want my advice about writing articles, I always work on them in draft space until they are ready - including having plenty of reliable sources to support my assertions and to demonstrate notability. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 05:50, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
Huggle
Hey Girth, I have downloaded Huggle and logged in. It shows a list of recent unhelpful changes but which button will I use to revert changes when it is unhelpful?Andrew Base (talk) 09:00, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base, I'm on mobile at the moment, but the drop-down menus along the top allow you to select different reasons for reverting (or to choose whether or not to warn, or to mark the edit as a good one). There are short-cut keys for each of the options, but I can't remember off the top of my head what they are - I think the menus tell you though? GirthSummit (blether) 17:41, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base, hi - I'm back home and in front of my PC - have you been able to figure this out yet? GirthSummit (blether) 20:03, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hey Girth, I've figured it out and started using huggle and it is working fine. Are IP users allowed to remove warnings from their talk page?Andrew Base (talk) 08:56, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base, see my comment above to James the Charizard - users are allowed to remove messages from their talk pages, and while WP:OWNTALK makes no mention of IP talk pages, I'm not aware of any guideline or policy that would cause us to treat IP talk pages differently in that regard. However, the removal of a warning is often considered an indication that the user has read and understood the message, so in the case of repeated vandalism you should escalate your warning when there have recently been warnings issued, even if they have been removed - if you end up reporting to AIV, and investigating admin will look at the talk page history, not just what's currently on the page. Question about revert at Ad Astra
why would the English for a movie title in Latin be "unnecessary"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.88.118.86 (talk) 15:11, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi IP editor, thanks for reaching out. As you can see, I've moved your comment to the bottom of the page, and given it a new section.
- So, I guess my edit summary of 'unnecessary' was a bit brief. What I meant was 'unnecessary in that sentence, and also slightly ungrammatical'. You added
Latin for _to the s stars,_
into a sentence about when and where the film had its world premier - aside from the typos, that wasn't the right place to add an assertion like that. The subject of the sentence is the film itself, but your assertion was about the phrase it takes its name from - they don't fit together in a single sentence, the two subjects are obviously related, but distinct from each other. I wouldn't have an issue with an assertion about the meaning of the film's title being added at an appropriate point in the article. Hope that makes sense. - I've changed all the refs to harv. For future reference here's notes:
- Install this thingy [1] It will make ugly red stuff show up on the page if there are errors. (I've left you one to fix on Macpherson Grant, so you can see what it looks like when a citation is broken).
- Dates are important. Please try to insert them in the citations, so the ref is easier to format. If there are more than one date in the same year by the same author, they are distinguished by a, b, c, etc. (See Historic Environment Scotland 2007a, b, etc.)
- If the author is known, put the ref in alpha order by surname.
- If the author is unknown, put the article name in alpha order.
- Link to author names, publisher names, etc. if you can. (author-link=no brackets will link to a WP article)
- It doesn't matter if the harv format goes in the front or the back of the citation, I prefer the front, but see Historic Environment Scotland, 1972 or 1976, where I put it at the end because the template doesn't give me cite=xxx
- Hope these are helpful tips. If not, you can totally disregard them. Except, please fix the error I left for you. SusunW (talk) 18:09, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
- SusunW, thanks for taking the time to explain that - one of the best things about working with you on this is how much I'm learning! I'll read through the notes properly, install that gizmo and fix the last citation later today when I'm in front of my pc. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 08:40, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
- SusunW, that seemed to work - I saw the ugly red stuff as you suggested, and spotted the error in the date of the citation - think it's fixed now, I'm not seeing any more red. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 11:57, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
- Perfect! Glad to be able to help. Can't take credit for any of it, someone gave me the gadget, someone else taught me about harv refs and still someone else taught me how to format it when there is no author. it truly does take a village to work on here. We all learn from each other. SusunW (talk) 14:59, 29 September 2019 (UTC)

Fram I attempted to drop by and put a note on your talk page, but Future Perfect at Sunrise's protection prevents me from doing that (no criticism intended BTW - I'm sure it was appropriate and necessary). I don't imagine that a protracted exposition of my views on the whole affair are of any interest to you, but I just wanted to say that I thought your withdrawal statement was remarkably dignified and, in view of the levels both of support and opposition from numerous first-rate editors, it was the honourable thing to do in order to avoid any wedges being driven further into the community. Trainer
Hey Girth, I realise that I am probably jumping steps but I was thinking of becoming a CVUA trainer since there are only two active trainers in CVUA. I think I have mastered all the species in the counter vandalism area. Do you think I should become a trainer?Andrew Base (talk) 06:03, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base, hi again. If I'm honest with you, I think you should build up more experience before doing that. When I first started counter vandalism training, I had something like 10,000 edits, almost all of them in the counter vandalism area. That had allowed me to encounter lots of different kinds of situation, which have come in useful when offering advice to my students, and former students, when they have come across similar things. Don't rush into something like this - your NPP training should be your focus at the moment, and then you should spend time building up experience in both areas before offering to train others. Iam frustrated....
Narendra Singh Dhami is a author , Social Activist ans Actor,he have written four books,he have acted on three movies. And you are asking about notably of Narendra Singh Dhami ? how stupid behavior is this ? is it fair ??Everestpedia (talk) 06:53, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Everestpedia, hi - I understand that you are frustrated, but you must not allow that to spill over and cause you to level personal attacks at other editors - using words like stupid, pathetic etc to describe others' contributions is not civil. Writing four books and appearing in three movies does not automatically make someone notable - you have been given links to our notability guidelines already, have you read them? You need to find reliable sources giving the subject significant coverage - if you can do that, no one will challenge their notability. Insulting people is going to make them less inclined to agree with you and help you, it is not helping your cause. GirthSummit (blether) 08:29, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Everestpedia I just took a look at the draft in question, and can confirm what AngusWOOF was right to decline it, since the sourcing is not there to support notability. Google searches, and Google information panels, Google books pages about his work, 'Good reads' pages - none of these are reliable sources that give his work significant coverage. The Surnayakhabar source looks like WP:UGC which was written by the subject, so would not be considered reliable or to count towards notability. The only potentially reliable source I'm seeing there is the Himalayan Times article - but that gives him a single passing mention, which is not significant coverage. There simply isn't enough material there to support an article - you need to find reliably published mainstream coverage of him or his writing to establish notability per WP:GNG or WP:NAUTHOR, or the article can't stand. Nobody is trying to frustrate you, we apply these criteria to all articles, especially to biographies of living people. Please just tone down the rhetoric, and look for better sourcing. GirthSummit (blether) 08:48, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- g.co = google search with the term. There's no indication when the person became an activist (I'm assuming they are currently one), what cause they are advocating, and what movements or organizations they started, joined, or led, or anything about how the person's writings, speeches, or acting has impacted society. Did the person get any awards for their work. The sourcing is still bleh. I've had to move the article from mainspace back to draft TWICE. If Everestpedia moves this to mainspace directly with the same level of sourcing. I will have to escalate to AFD or MFD and salt. AngusWOOF (bark • sniff) 14:31, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
My submission about Unlock Brands entry
Hello Girth, I wish you are well.
I'd like to ask you please to review the changes I made to turn this entry less "commercial". However, I really think Unlock Brands is a legit and rightful candidate to be featured on Wikipedia because it's kind of a phenomenon that an Agency from such a small country as Portugal is producing some of the worlds best, most relevant Branding and Design projects, like 2 FIFA World Football Cups' identity in a row.
And there are many other Branding and Design Agencies featured on Wikipedia, so the criteria should be the same upon approval.
Please take this into consideration and don't hesitate to contact me with further suggestions.
Thank you, have a nice day!
Masofema (talk) 09:58, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Masofema, thanks for reaching out. The new version is definitely an improvement, but there are still some unsourced assertions there, and listing all of the areas they work in still looks promotional to me. A better version of the article would state simply that they are a brand design firm, mention the names of the people involved, and note that they are known for having designed the logo for the relevant competitions - including at least one independent source (not the company's website) to support each assertion. I'd suggest that you cut the last paragraph entirely. I think that if you were to make those changes, this would be much more likely to pass a review.
- As an aside - I don't know whether you have any connection to the company - if not, you're fine, but if you are an employee, a relative of one of the founders, or have been contracts by them to write this article, then you need to read and comply with COI. - Just to let you know I agreed and implemented all your recommendations, so I hope you will find it suitable now. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do.
- I assure you that I don't work for Unlock Brands nor that I am being paid to do this.
- It's just that they are my friends and I really think their track record is really a great achievement, as well as the quality of their work.
- Waiting for your feedback,Masofema (talk) 13:08, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Masofema, hi again - since they are your friends, you do have a conflict of interest - you should read the COI guidelines linked to above, and make the necessary declaration on your user page. This does not mean that the article won't be published, it just makes it clear to reviewers that you have a connection and that you are doing everything properly and above-board. I'd suggest that you resubmit the draft and another reviewer will give it their look over. GirthSummit (blether) 15:08, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Masofema, just to let you know, I took the liberty of changing a few things on your draft - you are free to undo my changes if you like, but I think that will help it pass a review if you resubmit it now. Please do make the necessary COI declaration before resubmitting though. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 15:26, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Help
Hello Girth, I would like to write an article about Joe Townsend, can you provide me with some reliable sources? Sincerely. Andrew Base (talk) 14:40, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base, hi Andrew - I assume you're referring to the paralympic athlete? this looks reliable enough to get started with - it's probably not 100% independent, but I can't see anyone questioning his notability. I'm not very experienced at sporting biographies, I'd suggest taking a look at a few biographies of other athletes and see the sources they use. If you can find one that's a GA, that would probably be a good template to use. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 15:02, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- Girth Summit, Thanks for the advice and yes I'm referring to that athlete. I'll be working on that article tomorrow. Andrew Base (talk) 15:17, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base, hi again - I did a bit more Googling, see this, this, this and this. Go easy when working with interviews - anything the subject is saying about himself would be considered a primary source, so best avoided if possible, but statements made about him by a Telegraph journalist would probably be OK, and the coverage in those articles adds more weight to the notability. Just as an aside, you might want to add a disambiguation template pointing to Joseph Townsend. Good luck with it GirthSummit (blether) 15:25, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hey Girth, I've created the article Joe Townsend, thank you for providing me with the sources. Andrew Base (talk) 17:02, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- Andrew Base hi again - that looks like a good start. I changed a couple of your links, which were going to disambiguation pages (there's a script you can install that makes links to disambig pages show up in orange - can't remember which one it is at the moment, but I'll have a dig around to try and find it for you). I also added a few links to useful articles. A few thoughts:
- You need to check a couple of the refs - the first two are giving me a 404, so I think there's a mistake in your URLs? The first link also seems to be just a bare URL, which is a bad idea because those are very prone to WP:LINKROT - try to fill in as many details as you can in the Cite Template.
- You didn't add any categories - I've added a few, there might be some more that apply. I use WP:Hotcat to add them.
- You should also think about adding some talk page banners - there are scripts you can use to do that, but the easiest thing is probably to find another British paralympian and copy them from them from their talk page - just make sure you remove the article assessments (just leave them blank, an editor from one of the relevant projects will come along and add them).
- There are a couple of slightly WP:PUFFy phrases which you should probably tweak, like 'one of the best PT1 triathletes in the world' - we don't make judgments like that in Wikipedia's voice, we should either say that he has been described by such and such a source as "one of the best..." (thereby making it a direct quote), or say something more bland like 'established himself in the field of paralympic triathlon'.
- Hope that's useful - well done for getting started in the word of content creation! GirthSummit (blether) 19:10, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- Girth, I've removed that phrase. Andrew Base (talk) 11:21, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
