Serdar Tasci (German: [taskiː]) (born 24 April 1987) is a German footballer who plays as a centre back for Spartak Moscow.

Tasci started his career with VfB Stuttgart in 2006 and played with the club till 2013, captaining the side from 2011. In the process, he played nearly 250 times for the club, beside winning the 2006–07 Bundesliga. He was out for the maximum of the 2013–14 season with an injury and later joined Russian club Spartak Moscow. Though of Turkish origin, he represented the Germany national team from 2008 and 2010, gaining 14 caps. He represented his nation in 2010 World Cup, where Germany came third.

Club career

Tasci was born in Esslingen, Baden-Württemberg to Turkish parents from Artvin.[3] He started playing football when he was six and then played for the youth teams of SC Altbach, of Stuttgarter Kickers and, from July 1999 onwards, of Stuttgart.[4] Before the 2005–06 season, he joined Stuttgart's second team, playing in the Regionalliga (third division). Prior to 2006–07, he was promoted to the club's Bundesliga side. In October 2006, He would sign a contract with the club, which until 2010.[5][6]

After being included in the match against Nürnberg, where he was an unused substitute.,[7] Tasci had his professional debut on 20 August 2006 against Arminia Bielefeld, 3–2 win, in the second game of the season, being brought on for injured Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson in the 68th minute. His first goal followed only a week later, in the next game against Borussia Dortmund in a 1–3 defeat.[8] Tasci would later then score his second goal of the season came on 29 October 2006, in a 3–0 win over Schalke 04.[9] At the end of the season, Tasci made twenty-six appearance and scoring twice, where he helped the club win the Bundesliga in his first season. Tasci could have help the club win the double when he came on for Sami Khedira in extra time, as Stuttgart would lose 3–2 to Nürnberg in the final of DFB-Pokal. Manager Armin Veh said of Tasci, quoting: "He is a big surprise and plays with his 20 years as an age."[5]

In 2007-08 season, Tasci made a strong performance against Schalke in the opening game of the season, which kicker described his performance as clever and cool.[10] Tasci then made his Champions League debut on Matchday One, as Stuttgart lose 2–1 to Rangers.[11] He scored his first goal for the club, in a 4–1 loss against Hamburg on 20 October 2007.[12] Tasci made twenty-one appearance, as he mostly miss some of the season, due to injuries.[13][14][15]

In 2008-09 season, Tasci find himself fighting in the centre-back following the arrival of Khalid Boulahrouz, though he had nothing to fear.[16] In the Qualification Round of UEFA Cup against Hungarian side Győri ETO, Tasci scored his first European Goal, in a 2-1 victory, which they went through to the next round in the return leg.[17] But in December 2008 saw his manager and mentor Veh sacked.[18] Then on 4 April 2009, Tasci scored his first league goal of the season, in a 2-1 win over Bochum.[19] However, Tasci missed the season after injuring his knee, in a 2–0 loss against Eintracht Frankfurt. As a result, Tasci may required to have surgery.[20] Tasci decided against having surgery, ending his 2008-09 season.[21]

At the start of the 2009-10 season, On 29 August 2009, he extended his contract at Stuttgart until the summer of 2014.[22] His buy-out clause was included as part of signing a new contract.[23] He scored his first Champions League goal, as Stuttgart drew 1-1 with Romanian side Unirea Urziceni in the Group-Stage Matchday Two on 29 September 2009.[24] In his first half of the season, Tasci captained three matches in absent of Thomas Hitzlsperger. However, Tasci sustained "a stress fracture in his foot" that could put him out for the reminder of the season.[25] However, Tasci recovered a few weeks and got back in the first team, where he scored his first goal of the season, in a 1-1 draw against Bochum on 5 December 2009.[26] Following Hitzlsperger removal of captaincy, Tasci was reportedly furious over not chosen as a vice-captain.[27] On 12 March 2010, Tasci scored his second league goal of the season, in a 2-1 loss against Schalke.[28] Tasci then suffered an injury for the third time when he suffered a groin problem.[29] He would return fit, as he was an un-used substitute, in a match against Bayern Munich.[30] Tasci would make twenty-seven appearance despite recurrence of injuries he sustained during the 2009-10 season.

At the start of the 2010-11 season, Tasci find himself in the transfer speculation, as he attracted interests around European clubs.[31] Stuttgart's league rival Hamburger was keen to sign Tasci by making an enquiry.[32] This was denied by his agent, as he is staying put.[33] On 15 July 2010, Tasci expressed his desire to stay at the club.[34] After not being included in the opening game of the season, Tasci made his first start of the season, in a 3-2 loss against Borussia Dortmund.[35] Tasci scored his first goal for the club, in the Europa League Group-Stage Matchday One, in a 3-0 win over Young Boys.[36] He then suffered a thigh problem that kept him out for a long time.[37] In late-November, Tasci made a return to training, though he had bandage on his right knee.[38] Once again, Tasci was on the sideline when the thigh injury came to haunt him back despite reported fit.[39] He made his return on 19 December 2010, in the match against Bayern Munich, which Stuttgart lost 5-3.[40] Despite the injury, Tasci would went on to make twenty-six league appearance. Once again, Tasci continued to attracted interests from Zenit Saint Petersburg,[41] Tottenham Hotspur,[42] Málaga[43] and Arsenal.[44]

In 2011-12 season, Tasci scored his first goal of the season, in a 3-0 win over Hannover on 10 September 2011[45] and scored his second, in a 1–1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on 29 October 2011.[46] Right half way through the 2011-12 season, on 12 January 2012, Tasci was appointed the new captain of VfB Stuttgart by Bruno Labbadia.[47] Seven days before being appointed, Tasci and Cristian Molinaro were involved in an incident at training.[48] Tasci third goal came on 10 April 2012, in a 3-1 win over Augsburg[49] and he would make 28 appearance despite injuries occur during the season.[50][51][52][53]

In 2012-13 season, Tasci dismissed rumours, as he attracted interests from Manchester City and Barcelona, though he was prepared to make a move to Barcelona.[54][55] This occurred, as the club were making budget cuts, including the wage bills.[56] As the season starts, Tasci remained as the captain of Stuttgart.[57] In October, Tasci injured his Achilles tendon that kept him for a short while[58] and made his return against Hamburg on 21 October 2012.[59] Tasci scored his first goal of the club, in Matchday Five, in a 5-1 win over Steaua București to help the club go through to the knock-out stage.[60] Then, on 1 December 2012, Tasci received a straight red card for a serious foul play on Milorad Peković, in a 1–0 victory Greuther Fürth.[61] Later in the 2012–13 season, Tasci soon being on sideline twice, as well as, his Achilles tendon.[62] Tasci made his return a week later, as Stuttgart beat Schalke 2-1 on 11 May 2013.[63] In the DFB-Pokal Final, Tasci captained Stuttgart for the match, as the club would lose 3-2 to Bayern Munich.[64]

In 2013—14 season, Tasci sustained an injury during a match against Mainz in the opening game of the season and was replaced by Konstantin Rausch. At the treatment, it revealed that Tasci tore his lateral meniscus.[65] Just one more year left to his contract, Tasci says he was aiming to make a progress to sign a new contract, having expressed desire to prolong his contract to stay at Stuttgart.[66][67]

Upon leaving Stuttgart, Tasci quoted in the press: "It was not an easy decision. The present decision is not a decision against VfB, but for the new task. I had an incredibly great time at VfB, have played in the youth here, then I turned pro and recently been the captain. I have always said that I am a VfBler and that I will remain."[68]

Spartak Moscow

On 30 August 2013, Tasci moved to FC Spartak Moscow.[69][70]

Immediately joining the club, his debut delayed, due to the injuries he sustained while at Stuttgart and it left him out for three weeks.[71] He made his first appearance with the club on 2 October 2013 when he appeared in training.[72] After damaging his meniscus, Tasci announced that he would return in January following an operation.[73] Tasci made his debut for the club, on 17 March 2014, in a 2-2 draw against Anzhi Makhachkala.[74] Tasci would make three more appearance, which three of them were making starts.

In April 2014, Izvestia reported that Tasci could be leaving Spartak Moscow,[75] leading interests from Turkish side Fenerbahçe[76] and Beşiktaş.[77] Despite making four appearance in 2013-14 season, Tasci says he learning Russian, though he communicates well in German with his team-mates, Lucas Barrios, José Manuel Jurado and Patrick Ebert, though he can also communicate Turkish with his newly Manager Murat Yakin.[78]

International career

Because of his Turkish descent and German birthright, he was eligible to play for either Germany or Turkey, but in October 2006 he decided to pursue a career for Germany despite interests from Turkey.[79][80][81] Tasci explained his decision on pursuing his career for Germany, quoting: "It was a decision for Germany and not against Turkey, but in the end, it's German coach Joachim Löw, who made the most effort for me to come."[81]

He had his debut for the Germany national under-21 football team on 6 February 2007 in a 2–0 win against Scotland[82] and went on to make his senior international debut for Germany on 20 August 2008 in a friendly match against Belgium in Nuremberg, which they won 2–0. [81] The debut came exactly two years after his Bundesliga debut.[2]

He was called up to the Germany squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa by coach Löw, being the second Turkish player in the squad, along with Özil.[83][84] He made his World Cup debut as a substitute in Germany's match against Uruguay, coming on in the 91st minute for Mesut Özil. However, his World Cup debut was a disappointment, as Tasci struggled to touch a ball in his 125 seconds on the pitch, which the club's sporting director Jochen Schneider quoted: "But for Serdar Tascithe the World Cup from a purely personal point of view was certainly not satisfactory."[85]

Personal life

While playing for Stuttgart in his career, Tasci left school after Christmas holiday since making a breakthrough at the first team at Stuttgart, just four months left before finishing school. Despite leaving school, Tasci says he intends to study sports management.[86] He also has a sister.[87]

Tasci changed his diet. For example, he eats white bread and avoid drinking milk from animal products.[88] In August 2013, the owner of the site faced legal action when the owner used Tasci name on his social-network page.[89]
