Academies to list

[edit]

Listing every academy in US would be very redundant and cumbersome on pages, considering there are some academies with less than ten students. Not even the main list[[1]] lists all of these, however it does list many that are not significant. WikiManOne 21:51, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Where do you suggest we draw the line, then? Also, seeing as I added academies straight from that list, which ones aren't on that list? And if they aren't, they can be added. This is an editable encyclopedia, after all. --TorriTorri(Talk to me!) 22:41, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So would you suggest we add academies like Heritage Academy, DayStar Adventist Academy, Harbart Hills Academy and others? These schools mentioned all have roughly 20-30 students. We could also add Hartland Academy, or Wildwood Academy which are so small, they do not even have a presence on the internet. We have to draw it somewhere. Also, I never stated that some of the ones you added were not on the list, but one of the academies you added is Ouachita Hills Academy which is also very negligible. Do you really want to make the pages of prestigious schools like Monterey Bay Academy more cumbersome by adding links to very insignificant schools on their pages? WikiManOne 22:50, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest we add all schools that have their own articles. Wikipedia is not in the business of deciding what is "prestigious" and what is "negligible", it is in the business of writing things that are verifiable. If a school meets the notability guidelines, then it has every right to have an article and be on this template. If you feel that certain schools are not notable enough to be on Wikipedia, you are free to nominate them for deletion. --TorriTorri(Talk to me!) 22:58, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I do, however, agree that the template looks a bit bloated as is, and would support organizing it in the style of Template:Seventh-day Adventist Colleges and Universities in North America. However, I don't know enough about the different academies to know which ones are unaffiliated and which ones aren't. Perhaps the SDA Yearbook could help with this. --TorriTorri(Talk to me!) 23:04, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That would be very complicated, since some are run by Colleges which are run under either the Union, Division, or General Conference Level, other's are Conference schools, and yet others are run by a constituency of local churches. Instead, I have deleted those schools with articles that are stubs, or little more than stubs. I think this is workable for now. WikiManOne 23:09, 22 April 2010 (UTC)  ::::Perhaps also deleting the ones which are run at anything below the Conference level would also be appropriate? WikiManOne 23:11, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Response to third opinion request:
I am responding to a third opinion request for this page. I have made no previous edits on Template:Adventist Academies US and have no known association with the editors involved in this discussion. The third opinion process is informal and I have no special powers or authority apart from being a fresh pair of eyes.

The template is headed "Seventh-day Adventist academies in the United States," so for that reason I agree with TorriTorri that you should "add all schools that have their own articles." If a school is insufficiently notable to have an article, then it's probably insufficiently notable to be included in this template. Conversely, if it's insufficiently notable to appear in this template, it probably shouldn't have an article.

On a separate note, the template header currently links to Seventh-day_Adventist and Academy. It might be more helpful to link to List_of_Seventh-day_Adventist_secondary_schools#United_States. cheers—Thepm (talk) 01:32, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I wish to introduce another item to the discussion: "due weight". This is part of the Neutral Point of View policy, and says that for articles, minor points-of-view should be given lesser coverage, and tiny points-of-view should not be mentioned at all. Now granted this is a template not an article, but there may be a similar guideline for templates. Either way it is common sense. Thus I would ask: are all the schools government accredited? (They probably are, so this may not distinguish between them well). Maybe there is such a thing as an official Adventist school, and if this lined up well with aspects of prominence like student size, then this criterion could serve well. Colin MacLaurin (talk) 02:07, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So perhaps schools that are not accredited could be removed if they are not part of the official church structure. I still wish that there was a way to distinguish between schools with less than say, 50 students. I don't think such a school belongs next to schools like Monterey Bay, Takoma, Shenandoah Valley, etc. WikiManOne 19:50, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Remove repeated word

[edit]

Almost every entry in this list ends with "Academy". I suggest removing the final word (by "piping" the links). This is standard practice on templates. Colin MacLaurin (talk) 00:23, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
