Hi! This is my talk page, feel free to drop me a message. To experienced editors: feel free to stalk my talk page and reply to any threads here.To admins: I prefer that my talk page remain unprotected, even if it's being vandalized. Such edits do not particularly bother me and I prefer to remain accessible to anyone who would like to reach me. However, if the volume of vandalism is so high that no other solution would stop disruption, I don't mind if my talk page is semi-protected for a day or two. Hopefully, this is a rare occurrence.

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Israeli Air Force Bases

[edit]

Hi Elli, thank you for protecting the article Nevatim Airbase one month ago. I have written most of the content about the Israeli airbases, but I'm afraid that all IAF base articles will become victims of vandalism since the Israel-Iran conflict intensifies. Can you give them all the "Extended Protection"? They are listed down below on every IAF base article. Sdo216 (talk) 11:54, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Michigan seems like a dream to me now" sings Paul Simon in his song America from 1968. I've been there in August 1996 and remember Port Huron, Troy, Frankenmuth (German beer and Christmas store), Grandville, Holland State Park (a day at the beach) and Benton Harbour. Sdo216 (talk) 12:10, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdo216 thanks for reaching out :) I'm a bit hesitant to protect all of those articles as protections aren't usually done preemptively on such a large scale. Though the Arab-Israeli conflict is a bit of an exception there, many of these articles are only moderately related and don't seem to have attracted much disruption (such as Haifa Airport).
Also... I love that song. I'm glad you have fond memories of Michigan and hope you can return to visit sometime. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:33, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Elli. In July, you blocked 2604:BFC0:101:F117:0:0:0:0/64 because they were editing disruptively, and harassing me on my talk page. The same person has resurfaced with a slightly different IP address -- 2604:BFC0:101:FC8E:0:0:0:0/64. Would you be able to block that address as well? Thanks very much for your help. @Toughpigs I've blocked the /52; hopefully that is sufficient. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:15, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for 1964 Illinois House of Representatives election, "about the time in 1964 when Illinois elected their entire State House at-large. In a twist no one expected, politicians played politics, leading to a redistricting deadlock and this fascinating election, the only one of its type. This is my first FA nomination and I hope y'all enjoy reading and reviewing it as much as I enjoyed researching and writing it :)"! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:52, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for John W. Keogh

[edit]

On 5 November 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article John W. Keogh, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that John W. Keogh killed an attorney to encourage redistricting? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/John W. Keogh. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, John W. Keogh), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Extended confirmed

[edit]

on 25 August 2024 I asked if I can have extended confirmed access back. Can I have it back now? Most of the articles I wanna edit I can't, and I've been constructively editing for months HumansRightsIsCool (talk) 20:52, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I submitted a request like months ago and I never got a notification back. Can you just give it to me? Remember last time when I had extended confirmed access, there was no vandalism or edit wars or anything like that, I tried my best to edit constructive. I admit a few months ago I got impatience at times and tried to rush edits in one night and wasted people's time in talk pages by arguing about stupid things. But I changed. My discussions in talk pages have been constructive in the last few months, barely any of my edits get reverted because I believe they're good and makes the page better, and nobody had to explain the rules to me anymore, I recently read all of them. HumansRightsIsCool (talk) 21:07, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your edits to Template:U.S. current election editnotice.

Most of the cable news channels draw their data from AP/Reuters who makes their own calls. I think CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, etc. may still be reliable in terms of election reporting despite being poor outside of these elections. I don't think we should say anything other than "[name of source] called [name of state] for [candidate]" as attributed opinion. This kind of stuff requires multiple reliable sources, yes. I don't think hand picking arbitrary reliable sources and only using those sources to call elections is a good idea. Awesome Aasim 23:19, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Awesome Aasim the reason for this is that all of those five have independent desks. NBC and MSNBC make the same calls. Fox News is probably not reliable post-2020. And this is for listing states as "X won" in wikivoice, not noting that a candidate was called the winner by a particular station. For that, we can include even if there isn't a consensus between all the networks yet. Elli (talk | contribs) 23:22, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What about foreign news sources? Like CBC or BBC or ABC Australia or DW? Don't they also make calls on election night? Awesome Aasim 23:25, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty sure most of those aren't independent. And again we don't need to add more here unless you think a consensus of these five would be insufficient. Elli (talk | contribs) 23:51, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do agree there should be significant agreement among reliable sources, though. Awesome Aasim 23:26, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is also PBS/NPR. But they also pull data from AP. Awesome Aasim 23:28, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference, almost all the election calls are pulled from AP and Reuters. BBC used the Reuters count. Google, Bing and more used the AP count. If a call is made by both AP and Reuters, it almost certainly will be made by the others. Awesome Aasim 18:03, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm well aware of this. That's why I didn't include Google, Bing, etc. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:05, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I would oppose to including Google and Bing as well. Reuters and AP are the only two sources that these networks are basing their calls from. Awesome Aasim 19:47, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Iminthethickofit (09:55, 6 November 2024)

[edit]

Hi I'm Iminthethickofit (Inspired by the banger 'Thick of It' by KSI, not sure if you know what it is). How are you doing, hope you're well. My question today is why are some topics that have 'View Source' instead of the option to edit? I have heard that I think it has that because it is trying to protect the topic but just asking for comfirmation. Personal question (optional): Do you like 'Thick of It' by KSI, if you are an NPC you probably don't know it but becuase I assume you are human I'm sure you know what it is. What do you think of it? Kind regards, Iminthethickofit --Iminthethickofit (talk) 09:55, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Iminthethickofit (talk page stalker) When you see 'view source' instead of 'edit source', its because you cannot edit that page due to protection. Pages can be protected due to vandalism, edit war, disputes and a few other reasons . Thick of It (KSI song) is semi-protected, meaning you need at least 10 edits and 4 days. This comment is your only edit so far in Wikipedia and you only created this account on the 6th. Because the bar of semi-protection is low, you should consider editing elsewhere until you can edit semi-protected articles. And no, both me and your mentor Elli are humans, not NPCs. Question from TuuliMadero (10:51, 8 November 2024)

[edit]

Hello,

We would like to create a Wikipedia page about our company.

Is this possible? If possible, could you help us?

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=tuuli+gmbh

Thanks --TuuliMadero (talk) 10:51, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TuuliMadero hi and thanks for reaching out. You should generally not write about your company yourself, because you have a conflict of interest. You can request an article, though it is unlikely one will be created unless you have multiple reliable, independent sources providing significant coverage of your company. ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:29, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What does this 2024 DYK tell you about infoboxes for classical composers in 2024? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt hi and thanks for your appreciation. Totally understand not wanting to focus on admin- and ArbCom-related areas, they can be exhausting. I don't really know the context necessary to answer your question, though. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:26, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The context is that infoboxes have been regarded as a contentious topic, and I doubt that they still are. Feel free to look at the 5 composers to evaluate. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:57, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from AJRossetto9953 (00:20, 27 November 2024)

[edit]

Hi there! Do you know why primary sources are not allowed on here? its always confused me, as i always thought primary sources were better then secondary. Thank you! --AJRossetto9953 (talk) 00:20, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AJRossetto9953 happy to explain. Primary sources aren't disallowed, but they only provide an in-the-moment perspective. Wikipedia endeavors not to do analysis of things ourselves, as that is original research, but simply listing facts without analysis isn't very useful to our readers. So it's best to have secondary sources we can draw on for analysis, instead of citing primary sources.
This is different from, say, school projects, which would often want you to do your own analysis of sources to draw your own conclusions! It's an important skill to have; it's just not what we do here. Hope that clears things up :) Elli (talk | contribs) 15:44, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
