James M. Gavin

[edit]

Hi there. I saw, that you translated parts of the German James M. Gavin article and hope, that you are interested in him. I have much text on him, the only problem is that images are missing to illustrate the text. I mailed some authors, his wife and some others, but I didn't get useful answers or sources where to find free images. I found a collection at http://www.carlisle.army.mil/usamhi/ (Research Catalogs → fill in "James M. Gavin" → several hits, e.g. "photograph collection"). The Army Heritage & Education Center is located at 950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013-5021. I would order the stuff but the only way to receive it is to take a look at Carlisle for it, which is impossible for me (sitting here in Germany). It would be great if you could go there, or find someone else to do it and to ask, wheather the stuff is in the PD or the GNU FDL (a call would be usefull as well). I don’t know the USA that well and I think that it’s probably better if an inhabitant like you could help out there a bit. If you have an idea, where to search elsewhere and tell it to me, or find some images yourself and upload them, it would be great as well. It would be even ok for me, if you find someone else to do the research. I did my best and didn’t find any useful help at the image-search (even not here on en.wikipedia). I hope that you’ll help and have luck. Btw.: You seem to be interessted in military history. I’d like you to participate at Meta:Imperialism and world wars, if you want to. Would be great as well. So – I wrote enough now ;). Regards and best wishes from Hamburg, Germany, John N. 14:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John Thanks for your message. Unfortunately, i'm in the Netherlands which is a bit closer to Carlisle, PA than you are but is still too far away from a visit :) I've joined your project though. My interest is in military history (WWII especially) and since I'm a Dutchman my language skills are in English, German, French and Dutch, and translation is a hobby of mine. Hope to be able to contribute to your project as well.MarcoLittel 16:09, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Upps :). But thanks for you're help on the translation and the participating at the international project. Btw.: How good are you're german skills? Regards from Hamburg, John N. 18:10, 8 December 2006 (UTC) PS: If you're able to join the Wikipedia:Chat you can find "us" at #Imperialismus. -- John N. 18:12, 8 December 2006 (UTC) PS²: It would be great, if you could translate the messages from the project into dutch. -- John N. 18:15, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey John, My german language skills are fair. I can understand what is being said in the German texts, and I can translate it into english and dutch. No german speaker myself, so expect no german prose from me :) MarcoLittel 12:01, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Contribution

[edit]

Hello. I am currently trying to contribute to a battle in respect to giving a reason why a Viking force had to withdraw from a native attack, which I think was instrumental to the article itself and since the person in question received her place in history for that act. Its my understanding that Wikipedia is meant for contributions, but the people at that region see fit to leave the situation vague. They have told me that I cannot simply copy and past from references and, in short order, I re-wrote the small addition in my own words. I don't see what the problem here is, however, they simply revert my edits and give me vague conclusion to why they have done so. The site is intended to be used for non-commercial reproduction so we have no problems in copyright infringement. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Unspecified source for Image:Fmkauk.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Fmkauk.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 12:16, 26 March 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 12:16, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MarcoLittel, since you are a member of the WW1 task force I would like to ask if you are able to add to the Robert Nivelle article. It is currently on GA hold, as it requires more information, particularly about his early life and legacy. If there is a chance that you could contribute to the article by July 21, the date when the review ends, I would be very gratful. Thanks in advance. The article Operation Otto has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Little if any contact between the forces, no losses reported, Google Books search shows no hits for this Operation. Only source is not RS.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:28, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

[edit]

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. [edit]

Greetings,

To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
