Kuppuswamy Annamalai is an Indian politician (born 1984) who is current serving as the President of Bharatiya Janata Party,Tamil Nadu[1]. He contested in Aravakurichi Assembly constituency in 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election but lost to R. Elango of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam by a margin of 24,816 votes[2]. He previously serves as an IPS Officer in Karnataka before Joining Bharatiya Janata Party in 2020.
Early Life
He was born on June 4, 1984 in a farming family in Kongu Vellalar community in Thottampatti village next to Chinnadharapuram village in Karur district . [3] His parents were Kuppusamy Gounder and Parameshwari. He is married to Akila Swaminathan. The couple has two children. Annamalai aspired to be an entrepreneur while studying at the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow . But later he said in an interview that he took the Indian Civil Services exam to be with the common man .
Education
Annamalai completed his schooling in Karur and Namakkal district and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Ch. Co. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the College of Technology . Following this, Annamalai completed his Master of Business Administration course at the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, after topping the IIM CAD exam in his first attempt . [4] He then topped the 2011 class in the Indian Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in his first attempt. He speaks Tamil and English, well versed in Kannada and Hindi languages. [5]
Police involvement
Annamalai is known for his outstanding work as a Karnataka police officer. Also known as the "Lion of Karnataka". [6] He joined the Indian Police Service in 2011 .
As Assistant Superintendent of Police
He started his police career in September 2013 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Karkala Sub Division , Udupi District, Karnataka .
When he was Assistant Superintendent of Police in Annamalai Udupi, he once went to a food stall there during duty and asked for cigarettes, gutka and beedis. When the shopkeeper handed over the goods to him, Annamalai immediately fined him Rs 30,000 for selling the goods despite the ban on selling them in public shops. "Pay this amount today or tomorrow you will pay a lakh," he warned. [ Certificate Required ]
Superintendent of Police
Later he was promoted as Superintendent of Police at the same place on January 1, 2015 and served as District Superintendent of Police till August, 2016. It was during this time that he was praised for his good work investigating the case of a 17-year-old student who was assaulted, raped and murdered. In the name of the victim, Annamalai established a charity that provides an annual scholarship of Rs 10,000 to the girl who tops class 10 in Baintur taluk. [ Certificate Required ]
Studied Islam
Annamalai developed a deep interest in Islam during his tenure in Udupi, a neighboring district of Uttara Kannada . Bhatkal is a hotbed of Islamic radicalization and the birthplace of the Indian Mujahideen. Annamalai decided to study Islam "to understand what led to the misinterpretation of religious texts and led to widespread radicalization," most of the press conference said. This helped him to understand and investigate the ideology behind terrorist organizations like Indian Mujahideen, SIBI and ISIS. [10]
District Superintendent of Police
He was later transferred to Chikmagalur district of Karnataka and continued as the District Superintendent of Police till October 2018. He was promoted as Deputy Commissioner of Police Bangalore South in 2018 . [13]
Awards and honors
It is noteworthy that when he was transferred from Udupi and Chikmagalur, people took to the streets and cried and tried to stop him. [14] During his police career, he has received many awards from his superiors, chief ministers and governors. [10] With the help of the Moroccan police, he along with his team took a drastic action to arrest a terrorist accused Pannanje Raja who was holed up in the North African country of Morocco and bring him to India. Because of that he gained fame and won awards. [15] [16]
He gained fame for his action against the Baba Budhangiri riots. He worked well in controlling rape cases and religious riots in Karnataka. He was rewarded for his honesty and courage. [14] [17]
Anti-drug action
During his stint as a police officer, he spearheaded an awareness campaign against the sale of drugs and tobacco, shutting down many illegal liquor shops. He conducted seminars in colleges against drug addiction and set up complaint boxes for students to register anonymous tips about illegal activities. He is also a TED speaker.
Sudden resignation
He resigned from his police post in 2019. He then returned to his home state of Tamil Nadu . He was interested in organic farming and was engaged in related work. Even after several state governors and chief ministers asked him to reconsider his resignation decision, he did not change his decision. [18]
He attributes his resignation to the fact that the Kailash Mansarovar trip made him introspect about his life. He also said that the death of 47-year-old IPS officer Madhukar Shetty in December 2018 made him look back on his life. [10]
Social activist and author
After his resignation, he became interested as a speaker and organic farmer. He also started IAS Training Centre, Chiefs Foundation and several non-profit foundations. [10] [19] He has written several books on various topics such as corruption, political system, economy, police work. [20]
Political Contribution
Annamalai He basically came from a non-political background. After resigning, Annamalai was inspired by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideology. [18] [21] [22] Annamalai met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah and expressed how impressed he was with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and wanted to do something different in life. [23] [24] On 25 August 2020, a year after leaving the police, he joined the BJP.National General Secretary B. Muralidhar Rao, his long-time friend and Karnataka BJP minister C. D. Ravi and Tamil Nadu BJP leader L. He officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Murugan . [25]
He contested the Aravakurichi Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu 2021 assembly election and won by 24,816 votes against . He lost to R. Ilango. [26] [27] After L. Murugan became the Union Minister, he was appointed as the Tamil Nadu BJP president. He is the youngest ever state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
