Spammers: I would like for this page to stay reasonably clean. If you have business with me, feel free to leave a comment, else please move on. Please ignore the gigantic eye in the corner with the pump-action shotgun.
Unsigned messages will be ignored. You can sign your messages with four tildes (~~~~). I reserve the right to disruptively eliminate gigantic blobs of wiki-markup from signatures on a whim if I think they're cluttering up my talk page.
Please reconsider
[edit]In the RFC at Talk:Race and intelligence, editors who objected to that RFC's not addressing of the sourcing issue were specifically invited to open a separate RFC about that issue. (See the last sentence of the comment here.) Could you please reconsider your closure of the RFC in light of how it was opened in response to this invitation?
@Stonkaments: I'd like you to be aware of the discussion here as well, because I think the invitation to open a separate RFC was directed more to you than to me. If the thing you were invited to do won't actually be allowed, you should know that. --AndewNguyen (talk) 20:12, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- AndewNguyen, you should consider taking a break from this entire topic. Repeatedly opening new RfCs to push a particular outcome is a waste of everyone's time. The load-bearing part of JBL's comment was this: "
If there really is a fundamental issue not addressed by this RfC
". It's the clear consensus of the community that there is not such a fundamental issue, and you need to respect that. Mackensen (talk) 21:15, 9 May 2021 (UTC) - Sadly, I agree. It seems clear to me that the community is unwilling to engage this line of reasoning any further at this time, despite the issues that you, I, and others have raised. I don't think another RfC right now would be in the community's best interest. Stonkaments (talk) 01:08, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Stonkaments: If you ever think that things are changing, and that there's a possibility of solving the sourcing problem, please let me know in my user talk. I'll most likely notice the message within a few days, even if I'm not editing.
- Until then, I suppose it's time for me to disappear again. I'll be back when I see some evidence that Wikipedia is ready to take WP:RS and WP:V seriously as core policies, and not as obstacles to be overcome. --AndewNguyen (talk) 20:54, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi there. I had begun reading Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stalwart Esports (2nd nomination) to see if I should close it. I didn't finish reading but a no consensus outcome doesn't seem surprising. What does surprise me is the assertion that because there's been no explicit consensus that esports are not covered by an SNG it's reasonable to assert that they are covered. Why would that logic not equally apply to the assertion that they are covered by NORG - which was advanced in the discussion but I don't see mentioned in the close. Can you explain to me your thinking behind that part of your close which seems like a significant issue in that discussion? Thanks and best, Barkeep49 (talk) 04:25, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Barkeep49: my thinking was that the discussion produced no consensus one way or the other on that point; I should have mentioned NORG in addition to NCORP. In the absence of an SNG you really have to focus on source quality, and that got lost in the discussion. Mackensen (talk) 11:08, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. The way I read your close was that the SNG support was valid. I certainly agree with you that absent an SNG you have to rely on source quality and I'm unsurprised to hear that was lacking. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 18:25, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Jake Dickert
[edit]On 15 November 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Jake Dickert, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the new head coach for Washington State Cougars football once played in a football game two weeks after an appendectomy? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Jake Dickert. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Jake Dickert), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

[edit]Unnecessary revert, obviously the grammar needed amending. (Cltjames)(16:14, 17/11/2021) Cltjames (talk) 21:14, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Cltjames: perhaps so, but you introduced obvious grammatical errors into the lead of a featured article. Leaving aside the question of introducing gender-neutral language for a ship, apostrophes are not used to form a possessive. The names of ships must always be italicized. "Second World War" is a proper name and should always be capitalized. That was enough to suggest an immediate revert and I suggest gaining consensus on the talk page for wide-ranging changes to the lead. Best, Mackensen (talk) 22:17, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello! I noticed in January this year you marked Sandweid as a non-passenger stop on the Jungfraubahnen template. I was just wondering if you had a source for this, as although it's not marked on the timetables I'm pretty sure it's a request stop. Cheers! Osarius 14:08, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Osarius: See my comments at Talk:Sandweid railway station and some follow-up discussion at User talk:Andrewrabbott#File:Sandweid.JPG. I don't doubt that it might be an off-the-books request stop (I didn't know to look for it when I rode that train in 2019), but there's simply no verifiable information that this is the case. Mackensen (talk) 15:48, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing me to those pages. I've actually emailed the Jungfraubahnen and they've confirmed that the stop is indeed still open and passengers can request that the train stop there, also confirming that it does not appear on any timetables. It is possible to use an email as a reference? Osarius 15:26, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- I think there would be some real verifiability problems with using an unpublished communication, even if you went to the trouble of forwarding it to WP:OTRS or something similar. There's also a question of undue weight; how important is it to mention that the train can stop at this particular country bus stop on request, given that all the verifiable sources make no mention of it? I think if there were even one local Swiss newspaper article to the effect of "the timetable doesn't show, but locals know the secret" or some such then that would be a different matter. The whole situation is strange, and I can't think of a similar example anywhere else in the country. Mackensen (talk) 17:04, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Saxsquatch
[edit]Hi @Mackensen: This is regarding the Afd at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Saxsquatch. It was closed as non consensus, but I think it should have been deleted. There was an examination of the references that showed they were very poor. There was argument by an editor who believed they were sufficient, but that view was not supported by the last, who has examined the argument and decided it was false. Of the three keep votes, two did no examination of the references nor use the guidelines in argument. The first editor of voted keep, based on the fact the subject was collaborating with John Oates and Daft Punk but there was no collaboration. The subject was merely making a cover. The last editor Eggishorn found this view untenable. What is left is article with no valid secondary references for this BLP. It should be deleted. scope_creepTalk 14:55, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Scope creep: Thanks for reaching out. As a strictly procedural matter, I'm not willing to reverse my own close two months after the fact. That's a matter for Wikipedia:Deletion review. Re-reading the discussion now, I still think that there was not consensus among those who participated in the discussion. It would have benefited from broader participation, yes, but the discussion had been open a month and at some point these things have to end. Best, Mackensen (talk) 15:09, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks Mackensen. It did have a month. scope_creepTalk 15:12, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Maine Eastern Railroad templates
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Maine Eastern Railroad templates indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

LA Adjacent stations modules and LACMTA icon
[edit]Hey I was wondering if you know if Module:LACMTA icon can be merged into Module:Adjacent stations/Los Angeles Metro Rail, Module:Adjacent stations/Los Angeles Metro Busway, and Module:Adjacent stations/Los Angeles Railway? You probably have the most knowledge here as you've created 2 of the LA Adjacent stations modules. Gonnym (talk) 21:36, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Gonnym: probably, if we implement the icon parameters for the lines and then expose them with {{rail icon}}. Let me look at that. Mackensen (talk) 22:10, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, that's a thing. See Module:Adjacent stations/Los Angeles Metro Busway and Template:Los Angeles Metro Busway stations navbox. Mackensen (talk) 22:26, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Another similar question. Can Module:CTA header and Module:Adjacent stations/CTA be merged? Gonnym (talk) 11:25, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Gonnym: I doubt it; that functionality is much more complex. Mackensen (talk) 12:33, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Notes on TFD page
[edit]Hey there! I left you a couple of notes at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2022 January 30. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:39, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: I've never considered it necessary to tag s-line data modules. No one watches those and they're entirely dependent on the main templates. It's just extra work. Mackensen (talk) 18:22, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't know that there were exceptions to WP:TFDHOW. Can you please link to the instructions that allow for such exceptions? Those instructions specifically explain how to nominate multiple related templates:
If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with subst:tfd....
Those instructions also sayPlease notify the creator of the template nominated.
The templates I'm looking at are those like {{S-line/SNDX left/North}}, which are not dependent on a parent template that is being considered for deletion, and which is not a module. I have found Twinkle to be a very easy way to nominate a dozen or more templates for TFD quickly, and it follows all of the required steps. I recommend it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:07, 31 January 2022 (UTC)- TFDHOW isn't a guideline, or even a policy, so there's no need to speak of exceptions. I've dealt with deprecated s-line data modules (and no, they're not actually in the module namespace but they are effectively data modules) for years and generally never bothered with tagging the data modules. They're absolutely dependent on the parent templates because otherwise there's no way to invoke them. I don't think there's a problem here that needs solving though I appreciate your reaching out. Mackensen (talk) 19:24, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

STLinkLR and RapidRide templates
[edit]Hey, what should be done with the s-line templates linked in user pages that Template:STLinkLR color and Template:RapidRide color are used on? Gonnym (talk) 07:24, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Gonnym: to the extent that they're drafts, old copies, or whatever have you, I don't know that anything needs to be done. Mackensen (talk) 12:06, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- I mean either those templates have adjacent station copies and then we should replace them with those, or that they just aren't needed and should be sent to TfD. Template:S-line/STLinkLR left/Central for example was created in 2009. If it isn't used anywhere after 13 years then it probably isn't needed (or replaced by something else). Gonnym (talk) 12:39, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Gonnym:, oh that. I've just about finished migrating all the Seattle-area stuff to adjacent stations. I'm not quite ready to TfD the lot. Mackensen (talk) 12:40, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Wabash Railroad succession templates
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Wabash Railroad succession templates indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Hey
[edit]I am fine with a no consensus outcome. The problem is when editors come for a closure review, and the discussion gets archived without a result. That's the insult I wanted to avoid, and now that you closed the thread, we have avoided it. Thank you for your close, but please take my name out of it. Jehochman Talk 02:42, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Jehochman: certainly, if you like. I thought it appropriate to acknowledge your contribution in keeping the discussion active. Mackensen (talk) 02:45, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- It's not important either way. I just want to be sure you understood what I was grumbling about. Nice to see you around. Also, what does pace mean in this context? Jehochman Talk 02:47, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- See [1]; it's shorthand when expressing mild disagreement. I suppose it qualifies as arcane usage, but it saves space and I like it. On the broader issue, I agree that too many discussions fall through the cracks at AN, but I'm not sure what, if anything, can really be done about it. I'm not being dismissive; I've thought about the problem off and on for well over a decade and the problem doesn't admit a solution. Mackensen (talk) 02:57, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

More unused rail templates
[edit]I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but there are a few dozen more unused rail templates listed at User:Jonesey95/self-transcluded-templates. They don't show up in the regular report because they are transcluded in their own pages, but they are still not used anywhere else. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:44, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: I'm not surprised and I'm generally glad to hear about it. I'll look through the list when I get a chance. I assume it's mostly color templates. Mackensen (talk) 15:06, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- It's mostly RDTs. If you do a find on the page for " line" (with the space) and "subdivision" and "rail", you'll find them. Based on the list that you created, you seem to have a clever way to track down the templates regardless of their names. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:09, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: something to do with {{railway-routemap}} and similar templates; see Template talk:UK-railway-routemap#Misleading transclusions. Mackensen (talk) 19:30, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: strike that, it's citation templates. See Help_talk:Citation_Style_1#Self-transclusion,_again. Mackensen (talk) 01:07, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- I thought that might be the case, and I played with one of the templates a bit to see if it was true, but Redrose is almost always right, so I didn't dig in too deeply. Thanks for posting at HT:CS1; we'll see if anything comes of it. In the meantime, I'm considering expanding my report-creation skills so that I can generate my own reports in order to account for quirks like this. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:22, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Trinity Metro templates
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Trinity Metro templates indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Virgin Trains templates
[edit]Do you know what module replaced the templates at Category:Virgin Trains templates? I can't find a Virgin Trains module but they are all now unused. Gonnym (talk) 08:20, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
- Also Category:Silverlink templates other than the color templates which is still used twice. Gonnym (talk) 08:22, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

Edit notices for GLX articles
[edit]The first phase of the Green Line Extension is opening on Monday. I've been putting a lot of effort in to track down all the time-sensitive portions of the related articles and set them up with {{show by date}}; you can see the list here: Talk:Green Line Extension#Article changes for Union Square Branch opening. I'll be manually updating the templates etc that can't be auto-updated around 8am, but otherwise I'll be mostly away from my computer Sunday and Monday. Because of those templates, and because the articles will be highly visible (the GLX article will be on DYK), I'm worried both about vandalism and good-faith edits messing things up. Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but I was wondering if temporary (Saturday to Tuesday) edit notices for the relevant articles might be worthwhile, and/or semi-protection for the GLX articles. Your thoughts? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:00, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- You've done a great job getting everything ready and I don't think it's the end of the world if there's a little inconsistency during the first few hours of operation. I think editnotices and protection would be overkill; if there's lots of vandalism we can do the latter as needed. Mackensen (talk) 01:55, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Unused Train/Railway templates
[edit]Hey, Mackensen, I've noticed your subpage of unused train/railway templates. I was wondering since you've been bringing attention to this issue, do you plan on mass nominating or at least finding a place for these templates that are on your subpage? I would go through each one, but there are just so many at this point. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:33, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'm hoping to stay away from mass nominations. A number of these templates are still useful; some were never finished, some were accidentally removed, some are deprecated. Even if most of them are ultimately deleted, I want to spend some time on each of them. Mackensen (talk) 00:35, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
I have removed your comment. Since Floquenbeam specifically said they weren't invoking Godwin's Law, your claim that they were was simply false, as well as unnecessary. Black Kite (talk) 23:22, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Black Kite: That's silly and you should reverse yourself. One can't bring up Niemöller and then say you're not breaking Godwin's Law. We don't usually leave it up to the original poster to determine whether they've broken it or not. That conversation shouldn't be within a thousand yards of Niemöller. Cheap rhetoric is invoking Niemöller and then immediately trying to distance yourself from all the implications. Mackensen (talk) 23:28, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
- No, when someone uses an analogy and is at distinct pain to point out that they're not using it in a certain manner, you can't simply ignore that. If you'd said something like "regardless of your caveat, I don't think it's appropriate to reference this", then fine. But implying that they were equating murder of civilians and the WMF is completely over the top. Black Kite (talk) 23:40, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Black Kite: Yes, it would be completely over the top to make such a comparison. I'm glad we agree. Mackensen (talk) 23:42, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Um, I thought that was an impostor for a bit.
[edit]Just a heads up, this edit was technically a BLP violation, as there wasn't a source for that provided yet. Anyway, a few seconds later, an IP or "fixed" your edit, and... broke the template entirely. 🤦♂️ Mako001 (C) (T) 🇺🇦 15:20, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Mako001: technically, yes, but sourcing something to Twitter isn't great and I figured we'd have a quick re-reporting of Schefter's tweet within a few minutes (which did happen). My main concern was to stabilize the article since we can rely on newbie editors for many things but template magic and standard formatting aren't among them. I suppose I could have protected instead but the edits were mostly well-meaning. Hell of a thing, he was 24. Mackensen (talk) 16:04, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- Indeed, tragic. Mako001 (C) (T) 🇺🇦 16:38, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
