"Dalla Dalla" (stylized in all caps; Korean: 달라달라; lit. Different Different) is the debut single by South Korean girl group Itzy, released by JYP Entertainment on February 12, 2019.[1] It was released alongside its music video, and was made available as a digital single titled "IT'z Different", which features "Want It?" as the B-side. At the time of release, the song's music video achieved the highest number of views for a K-pop group's debut video, with 17.1 million views in 24 hours.[2][3]
Composition
"Dalla Dalla" is written by music production team Galactika (별들의전쟁)[4] and lyrically is a song that exudes confidence and sass as the girls showcase their distinct style. "Dalla (달라)" means “different” in Korean, and the singers are an inspiration as they belt out the empowering refrain: “I’m different from other kids/Don’t try to measure me by your standards/I love myself, I’m somewhat different, yeah/I’m different from you”[5] The song fuses electro-pop, hip-hop and acid house.
Critical reception
Tamar Herman of Billboard called the track an "empowering anthem, introducing ITZY as a group that's an alternative to its peers", as well as "feisty and quick to shift tempos and genres", highlighting its "hip-hop breakdowns" throughout.[1] Writing for Kotaku, Seung Park judged it to be an "eclectic mashup of a mature version of some of Red Velvet's more esoteric work with Blackpink or 2NE1's hip-hop-esque aesthetic". Park also named it the "K-Pop Pick of the Day", saying it is a "solid opening bell of what is shaping up to be a long and interesting career".[6] Lee Jeong-ho called the track a "fusion" of the "merits of various genres such as EDM, house, hip-hop and so on".[7]
Music video
At the time when the music video was uploaded on JYP Entertainment's YouTube channel on February 11, 2019, it became the most viewed debut video by a K-pop group with 17.1 million views in 24 hours, beating the record set by "La Vie en Rose" by Iz One.[2][1][3] "Dalla Dalla" also holds the record for the fastest K-pop debut music video to reach 100 million views.[8] The music video was directed by the Naive Creative Production.[9]
Promotion
Itzy held a live broadcast "The 1st Single Live Premiere" on Naver V Live to commemorate their debut, where they also performed the full choreography of the song for the first time.[10][11] The group promoted "Dalla Dalla" on several music programs in South Korea including M Countdown, Music Bank, Show! Music Core, Inkigayo and Show Champion, on February 14, 15, 16, 17 and 20, respectively.[12][13][14][15][16]
Commercial performance
"Dalla Dalla" debuted at number 5 on Gaon's Digital Chart until it reached its peak position at number 2, three weeks after its release.[17][18] It also peaked at number 2, 2, 20 and 31 on K-pop Hot 100, Billboard charts' World Digital Songs, RMNZ Hot Singles and Billboard Japan Hot 100 respectively.[19] [20][21][22]
