BlackPink (Hangul: 블랙핑크) is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment. The group consists of four members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. They debuted with release single album Square One on August 8, 2016.

History

YG Entertainment revealed the final line-up and name of the group on June 29, 2016.[1][2] BlackPink, which consists of four members, is the first girl group to debut under YG Entertainment in seven years.[3]

Black Pink debuted with their single album Square One on August 8, 2016 with two promotional singles.[3][4] "Boombayah" was produced by Teddy Park and co-written with Bekuh BOOM.[5] Its music video was directed by Seo Hyun-seung.[6] The second title track was the "minimal hip hop track"[7] "Whistle", which was produced by Teddy Park and Future Bounce, and written by Teddy Park and Bekuh BOOM.[8][9]

Their debut singles hit number one on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart and the fastest act to do so, and only the third Korean artist to hold the top two positions after Psy and Big Bang.[10] "Whistle" topped the digital, download, streaming and mobile chart of Gaon Chart of August 2016.[11][12] They also reached number one on the weekly, popularity, music video, and K-pop music video chart of China’s biggest music-streaming website QQ Music.[13] The group's first music show performance was aired on August 14, 2016 on SBS's Inkigayo.[14] Their win on Inkigayo (aired on August 21, 2016), broke the record for girl group with the shortest time to win on a music program after debut (14 days).[15] Blackpink wrapped up promotion for Square One on September 11, 2016 with another win on Inkigayo.[13]

BlackPink will release their second single album Square Two with the lead single "Playing with Fire" on November 1, 2016.[16]

Endorsements

Despite having debuted 3 weeks prior, Blackpink placed second behind EXO for brand reputation based on a study by Korea Institute of Corporate Reputation.[17] Another study targeting girl groups revealed that the group's brand influence had already surpassed that of Girls' Generation and Twice for September. The chief of the reputations research lab described the feat as a "first".[18]

They became endorsers for several brands including Reebok,[19] Moonshot [20] and Saint Scott.[21] They were also featured as models for major magazines including Nylon Korea.[22]
