Jane Jae Kyung Shin (Jane Shin), M.D. (Korean: 신재경, Hanja: 申才炅) is a Canadian politician who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in the 2013 provincial election.[1] She represents the electoral district of Burnaby-Lougheed as a member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party. Shin is the first Korean Canadian elected to the provincial legislature.[2]

Early life and education

Shin was born in South Korea and emigrated to Canada when she was 11 years old. Five years later (including during her 16th birthday) she was hospitalized for disease described as aplastic anemia[3] or leukaemia.[4][5]

Shin's parents ran an ice-cream store, which failed when they were in their 50s, leading them to go back to school to get credentials in health care. She credits this experience with her desire to "fight to keep quality education accessible and affordable for all of us, even for the oldest, like my parents, the weakest and the most desperately eager of us." [6]

Shin studied genetics and cell biology at the University of British Columbia for several years but did not graduate.[7] Shin completed a degree in medicine in 2007 from Spartan Health Sciences University in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, in the Caribbean. During medical school, Shin performed clinical rotations at University of Edinburgh, Dalhousie University, and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital.[8] Following her medical training, Shin interned in clinical research at the Royal Victoria Infirmary of Newcastle upon Tyne, where she contributed to two publications on chronic fatigue syndrome.[9][10] Shin did not complete a residency[7] and is not licensed to practice medicine in British Columbia.[11]

Shin taught in the health care field at British Columbia Institute of Technology, Vancouver Community College, and West Coast College of Massage Therapy.[2]

Provincial politics

Shin entered politics as a NDP candidate for the riding of Burnaby-Lougheed in the 2013 provincial election under the party leadership of Adrian Dix. Shin won the election by fewer than 500 votes over Liberal candidate Ken Kramer, who replaced the retiring Harry Bloy who had held the riding for 12 years.[1]

Shin is the deputy critic for Small Business, Tourism, Arts & Culture and Multiculturalism, and serves on the Select Standing Committee for Health.[2]
