Advice on uploading images with expired copyright

I was wondering if you could help me. I am interested in uploading an image (to wiki commons) which is an illustration from hundreds of years ago (to enrich an article). I assume any such illustrations are in the public domain, are they not - due to their age? But how can I go about proving that the image in question is indeed that old, as the image source (an article) doesn't explicitly state the age/origin date (but the images themselves are pretty well known, which is how I know). Hi In ictu - would you please stop changing disambiguators away from "(entertainer)"? When to use it is an unsettled question as you know, with RMs going both ways recently. It is certainly not uncontroversial. If you want to start an RfC on the issue, feel free, but otherwise I would suggest pursuing them as individual RMs for the time being until a clear consensus on the issue emerges. Thanks. Dohn, I'm using my judgment as an editor. Most of those I have reverted have been undiscussed moves and very clearly counter sources. However you're welcome to revert per WP:BRD.

As for gone both ways. The simple one's haven't. You have been in a minority so far in supporting a neologism that is rarely or in some cases never used in printed sources. A balance has to be struck between leaving some (where it's justified), reverting some by WP:MOVE where it's obvious, and putting in WP:RM where there could be a case for merits on both sides.

As I say you can revert, but I recommend you run ["entertainer Name"] in Google Books before doing so. Ultimately we must follow the language and terms of reliable sources. In ictu oculi (talk) 17:30, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Fair enough. I just wish that we could at least get on the same page about the word itself. This may be an ENGVAR or a native-speaker issue, but it is just not the case that "entertainer" is limited to court jesters and vaudevillians. A singer is an entertainer. An actor is an entertainer. And "entertainer" is especially helpful as a descriptor when someone is notable within multiple realms of entertainment: a model-dancer, or a comedian-actor. I've already shown you a dozen examples of both individuals and groups being called "entertainers" by highly reputable sources, from newspapers up to and including academic journals. I don't understand your continued reluctance to recognize that that sense of "entertainer" is widely accepted, and certainly not a neologism. Is "singer" preferable when someone is exclusively (or nearly) notable as a singer? Sure. But if someone is notable as both a singer and an actor, "(singer)" becomes less and less helpful. We could use "(singer/actor)", but "(entertainer)" is more consistent when applied to all subjects who are notable across disciplines, don't you think? Dohn joe (talk) 18:16, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

We could, you could suggest it.

Otherwise we don't need to rehash the RMs. Yes you've found some cases where 3% or 5% of printed sources use "entertainer Fred" among 80% for "the singer Fred" - but that 3% or 5% fails WP:AT twice, both on recognition and precision. The reason that the (singer) dabs are being restored in RMs is that 80+% hits for "the singer Fred" show the printed language as it is.

So far I haven't observed any ENGVAR issue when Australian, Canadian, US, UK printed sources all avoid "entertainer Fred". :::The argument that you're applying would mean going through Category:American female singers and moving every (singer) to (entertainer). Why not merge Category:American female singers into Category:American female singers and be done with it?

Those are rhetorical questions by the way, they are to explain my view not, with respect, invite discussion here, now, that can wait. Ultimately printed sources will bring titles to something sensible. In ictu oculi (talk) 18:28, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

@Richhoncho: Cuchullain's highly reasonable, I suspect it's just that there hasn't been much discussion of what "covered by" means in WP:DAB. The Holy Incense

In ictu oculi, hi! My article on the Holy Incense was rejected on grounds that it sounded more like an essay than an encyclopedia article. I do not deny that it has an essay-like style, but this is larger due to my past writing experiences on other venues. In short, I am asking your advice on how to change the style and make the current article acceptable to the set-requirements of Wikipedia. It isn't an issue of owning articles, even though you went to the article and put a speedy on it because I created it as part of disambiguating the singer, WP:A7 requires a deleting editor to look at the interwiki link for sources in the local wikipedia language - you put a WP:A7 on a People's Artist with extensive filmography, leading roles in the 1970s and 1980s, and even roles in French-Vietnamese and South-Korean Vietnamese coproductions. The problem, as essentially a neophyte at Wikipedia, is to know how to blow the whistle on Weldneck, now that he has stooped to outright fabrications -- by adding nonexistent words to documentary sources -- and to wholesale deletion of well-sourced facts that disturb his point of view. I'd much appreciate any guidance you can offer on how to proceed to save the No Gun Ri Massacre article from further destruction. I posted a complaint a couple of weeks ago at the edit-warring noticeboard, where admin Mark Arsten suggested it belonged at the ANI noticeboard. He then, however, had second thoughts, and I've now refashioned the appeal, viewable at my sandbox. I'm not sure Arsten can or will deal with it. Any advice? As I point out in the appeal, this is not a simple matter of citing "four reverts" and matching them up with the previous texts, to win automatic censure, but instead we're dealing with a major, broad attack via dozens of destructive edits, heedless of efforts to point out the facts. Ambiguous titles

Thanks for creating Raising of the widow of Zarephath's son. I note that the title is formally ambiguous, though maybe it wouldn't confuse anybody. But it could mean the raising of the widow of the son of Zarephath, or else the raising of the son of the widow of Zarephath. Re Zarephath/Nain good point, I had thought this was less stiff wording, however the phrase occurse in printed sources "raising of the son of the widow of Nain" more than the other. These can both be switched around.

I have created 1,000s of articles - many of which started as stubs or starts - which are all still there, many developed by myself and other editors well beyond stub. I take WP:IDEALSTUB as the reference point for creating a stub. If, specifically, the three articles above do not pass policy on speedy deletion then why have you submitted them to AFD rather than placed a speedy deletion tag? Hello IIO, I notice that "Deal with the Devil (song)" was moved to "Deal with the Devil (Onyx song)", even though New York music ensemble Onyx has never produced a notable song by this name. I think that "Deal with the Devil (2013 Pop Evil song)" [or a truncated version thereof] would be a much better title for the article. I appreciate what you're doing with the song articles tonight. Drink It Down for instance is an signal improvement over whatever was there before, from a musicological and encyclopedic standpoint.

As a practical matter, Wikipedians will not go for moving (say) BlatherPop (song) to BlatherPop (Mickey Moron and the Cretins song) and so forthy unless and until there's another article for a song with the same name already existing. I think people should be a bit flexible about that, but they're not. So in cases like the One Drop (song) deal I suppose it's necessary to create the other article first, even if it's a one-sentence placeholder for the time being. I fixed up the situation there though.

It gets kind of random. If Drink It Down (L'Arc-en-Ciel song) had already existed as a redirect (as was the case with One Drop (KAT-TUN song)), then I suppose you would have to name your article One Drop (drinking song) or One Drop (folk song) or something, then requested (at WP:RMT) an uncontested move of the existing Drink It Down (which would have been about the L'Arc-en-Ciel song) over to Drink It Down (L'Arc-en-Ciel song). Then you'd have to recreate the article Drink It Down as a redirect to both songs. (Or, if you wanted to try, make that case that your "Drink It Down" is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for that phrase so that One Drop (drinking song) should be move to Drink It Down. But you probably wouldn't win that argument.)

A false allegation to a pop music admin, led to the admin understanding that I had created a Vietnam biography deliberately so that Tbhotch could place a speedy deletion tag and then I would question speedy deletion tag usages, whatever the intention led to the pop music admin believing this (which constitutes paranormal powers of prophecy on my part) and waving his block stick. I don't think that admin will do the same again, since it was shown to be ridiculous, but it's possible Tbhotch will try it with another admin.
