RRR is an upcoming 2021 Indian Telugu-language action-period drama film[3] written and directed by S. S. Rajamouli. It stars Junior NTR, Ramcharan Konidela, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris in the leading roles.[4] It is a fictional story revolving around India's freedom fighters, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem who fought against the British Raj and Nizam of Hyderabad respectively.[5] The film is scheduled for release on 8 January 2021 along with the dubbed versions in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam languages.[6][7]

Development

In October 2017, S. S. Rajamouli announced that his next film after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, would be produced by D. V. V. Danayya under DVV Entertainments banner.[12] In March 2018, Rajamouli confirmed that the film would be starring both Jr NTR and Ram Charan.[13] The film was tentatively titled as #RRR ,[14] which was later confirmed to be the official title because S. S. Rajamouli said in an interview that it can be a universal title across all the languages with certain derivations in each language.[15][16]

Casting

The film marks the South Indian cinema debut of actors Ajay Devgan and Alia Bhatt.[4] Alia Bhatt was paired opposite Ram Charan while Ajay Devgn would have an extended cameo.[17] Tamil actor Samuthirakani was roped in to play a crucial role.[10][17] In November 2019, It was announced that Hollywood actors Ray Stevenson, Olivia Morris and Alison Doody would play major roles. Stevenson, who featured in Thor, would play the lead antagonist Scott whereas Doody is cast as Lady Scott.[9]

Filming

Principal photography of the film commenced on 19 November 2018 in Hyderabad. The first schedule involved an action sequence shot at a set erected at Aluminium factory, Hyderabad.[18] N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan and S. S. Rajamouli have taken off to Vadodara on 29 March 2019 to continue with the shoot of the film.[19] The second schedule of the film took place in Bulgaria where the crew shot crucial scenes featuring Jr NTR.[20] Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn began his shooting schedule on 21 January 2020.[21]

Marketing and release

The film was earlier scheduled to be released on 30 July 2020.[2] However, on 5 February 2020, a new release date of 8 January 2021 was announced.[22] On 25 March 2020, the expansion of the title RRR is revealed as Roudram Ranam Rudhiram in Telugu, Raththam Ranam Rowthiram in Tamil, Rise Roar Revolt in Hindi, Roudra Rana Rudhira in Kannada, and Rudhiram Ranam Roudhram in Malayalam through a motion poster realesed by the team and on 27 March 2020 a sneak peek was realesed regarding the birthday of Rancharan Konidela one of the leading protagonist of the film Alluri Sitarama Raju.[23][24]
