Talk to me, Andy Mabbett
- If you post a message on this page, I'll reply on this page to avoid fragmenting the discussion.
- If I've left you a message on your talk page, I will be watching it, so please reply there rather than here (but do feel free to drop a copy of {{Talkback}} here).
- If appropriate, I will move discussion from here to the relevant article's talk page, so that anyone interested can join in.
- If you want to start a new discussion thread, please start it at the bottom of the page. Better still, use the "new section" tab next to the "edit this page" tab, or the link at the foot of this section, either of which will do that automatically.
- Please do not make links from within section headings.
- Inaccessible HTML (coloured text, "small" tags, etc.) will be removed from this page on sight. Broken heading or list structures will be fixed.
- Please sign and date your entries by inserting four tildes (~~~~) at the end.
- Start a new discussion.

Request for Clarification
Sir, This is TheGoodIndian here. I see that my account on Wikispecies has been blocked infinitely, citing vandalism, on 1 March. The vernacular names for a few birds that I had added were reverted immediately. I am both surprised and confused as to what action of mine constituted vandalism. I can assure you that all I have done on this platform has been in good faith. I request you to kindly explain to me what led to this block. Regards, TheGoodIndian (talk) 14:05, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- Your most recent edit there added a vernacular name for a bird which translates as "India is at risk". Others were apparently equally unrelated to the names of birds. You are free to place an unblock request on your talk page there. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:28, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for such a quick response. My recent edits adding vernacular names of a few Indian birds, were based on a report titled 'State of India's Birds 2020'. While the original report is in English, a one page summary in Bengali was also released (as were summaries in other Indian languages), which served as my primary source. Here is the link for the original report: https://www.stateofindiasbirds.in/ And here is the Bengali summary: https://www.stateofindiasbirds.in/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/SOIB-one-pager_BANGLA_WEB.pdf Anyone with a proper grasp of Bengali will be able to tell you that none of the names there can possibly translate to "India is at risk". This has been a very unfortunate misunderstanding. And I request you, sir, to help me clear this, since I don't know how to place an 'unblock request'. Regards, TheGoodIndian (talk) 17:29, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- @TheGoodIndian: I looked at your edit to wikispecies:Alauda gulgula and put the name you added ঝুঁটিভরত into Google translate. The translation from Google is "India is at risk". In light of that, perhaps you want to revise your assertion that "Anyone with a proper grasp of Bengali will be able to tell you that none of the names there can possibly translate to "India is at risk". While ঝুঁটিভরত might be better translated as something like "risky", are you absolutely sure that your source doesn't have a typo?
- @Andy: I don't see a similar problem with the other edits, and perhaps we ought not to assume that the local names of birds have to translate into something sensible in English? --RexxS (talk) 19:23, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- @RexxS: I will stand by my assertion. As a native Bengali-speaker, I can tell you that the word ঝুঁটি (jhoo-ti) translates to a tuft of hair on the head, or a crest, the kind that you can see over the head of a rooster or in samurai hairstyles. The second part is ভরত (bhorot), which may have been mistaken for ভারত (bharot), the name for 'India' in many Indian languages including Bengali. Nevertheless, I checked Google Translate myself and found that it is, indeed, translating ঝুঁটি as "risk". I assume that it is mistaking ঝুঁটি for the word ঝুঁকি (jhoo-ki), which is the actual Bengali for risk. I know that no Wiki project is a platform for political comments, and I have never and will never write anything so ridiculous as "India is at risk" on such a site. As for the source, since that report has been produced by renowned institutions, including the WWF and the Wildlife Institute of India, it is extremely unlikely that it will have a typo. I rest my case and request both you and Mr Mabbett to kindly remove the block on my Wikispecies account. Regards, TheGoodIndian (talk) 13:40, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- As I noted above; You are free to place an unblock request on your talk page there.. I also draw your attention to the note left on that talk page. I am now closing this discussion. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:58, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [1]
Changes later this week
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [2]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [3]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [4]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [5]
- There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.
-
wgMFSpecialCaseMainPage
was used for the mobile site. It was deprecated in 2017. It will stop working in April. Wikis should see if they use it. If they do they should fix it. You can read more and ask for help. This affects 183 wikis. There is a list. [6]
