On November 27, 2015, a shooting and five-hour standoff with police occurred at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado.[3] Three people were killed: a University of Colorado police officer and two civilians.[4] The suspected shooter, identified as Robert Lewis Dear,[2] was captured alive after police convinced him to surrender.[3]

Shooting

Law enforcement responded to a report of an active shooter at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic at approximately 11:38 a.m. MST.[5] According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the gunman first opened fire outside or near the clinic before moving inside. As responding officers approached the building, the suspect fired at them, hitting several. A five-hour standoff then ensued.[5][6] Initial reports described the gunman as "wearing hunting gear and armed with a long gun".[7]

At the time of the incident, twenty gunshots were reportedly fired within five minutes.[8][9] Police swarmed the area, and nearby stores were put on lockdown.[3][4]

During the standoff, officers who made it inside the Planned Parenthood building reportedly shouted to communicate with the suspect, attempting to persuade him to surrender. The gunman eventually complied, resulting in his arrest at 4:52 p.m.[1][5] Following apprehension of the suspect, law enforcement began searching the building, as well as the suspect's car, for possible explosives.[6]

Suspect

Robert Lewis Dear, age 57, was later identified as the suspected gunman.[2] He was from North Carolina,[10] where he lived part-time in a remote cabin in Black Mountain and a house in Swannanoa.[11] Neighbors described him as solitary, often rambling about indiscernible topics, and having few religious and political leanings, including with religion and abortion.[12][13]

Aftermath

Three deaths resulting from the shootout were reported: Garrett Swasey, a 44-year-old University of Colorado police officer; and two civilians.[4] Nine other victims, comprised of five police officers and four civilians, were also reportedly shot. All of the surviving victims were admitted to local area hospitals and listed in good condition.[1][14][15]

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were called on to assist in the investigation and President Barack Obama was briefed on the incident.[6][14] The day after the shooting, Obama later said in a written statement his call for additional gun control legislation.[16] As a precautionary response to the shooting, additional law enforcement were assigned to Planned Parenthood clinics in New York City and Denver.[17]

Dear is first scheduled to appear in court on November 30.[13]
