Théodore Steeg (French pronunciation: [teodɔʁ stɛɡ]; 19 December 1868 in Libourne, Gironde – 19 December 1950 in Paris) was a French politician of the Third Republic, deputy of the Seine from 1906 to 1914 and senator of the same department from 1914 to 1940.

Political career

Steeg was a deputy from the Seine from 1904.[1]

Minister (1911-1921)

Théodore Steeg held various ministerial positions between 1911 and 1921:

Colonial administrator (1921-1929)

Steeg was governor general of Algeria from 1921 to 1925.[2]

He was Minister of Justice in Painlevé's second cabinet (17 April – 10 October 1925), replacing René Renoult. His successor was Anatole de Monzie.

Steeg was resident general of Morocco from 1925 to 1929.[2] He favored introducing French settlers into the country, and in 1927 created a bank to encourage irrigation agriculture and colonization.[3] In his first three years he introduced almost as many colonists to Morocco as his predecessor Hubert Lyautey had in thirteen.[2] In Morocco, Steeg was known as the "water governor".[4] Steeg issued a decree of 4 January 1927 that created a fund for large scale irrigation projects such as the El Kansera dam on the Beth and the N'fis dam, both of which were started that year.[5]

Ministerial offices (1930-1938)

Steeg was Minister of Justice in Camille Chautemps's government (21 February – 1 March 1930) replacing Lucien Hubert. He was succeeded in this position by Raoul Péret. He was President of the Council (and simultaneously Minister of Colonies) of a conservative majority from 13 December 1930 to 27 January 1931. He was briefly Minister of Colonies in Camille Chautemps's cabinet (18 January – 13 March 1938)

Steeg's Government, 13 December 1930 – 27 January 1931

Changes

  • 23 December 1930 - Maurice Dormann succeeds Thoumyre as Minister of Pensions.
