Macedonian language is a Slavic language that uses the Cyrillic alphabet. The Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet is officially regulated in the Republic of Macedonia and it is widely used by the institutions in the country. Along with the Cyrillic alphabet, there is also and Latin version of the alphabet so called Macedonian Latin alphabet. This alphabet is taught in the second year in the primary school. This variant of the Macedonian alphabet contains all letters from the standard English alphabet except the letters: W, Q, Y and X. The characteristic letters of the Macedonian Latin version are the letters Ǵǵ /gʲ/, Ḱḱ /kʲ/, and Dz /dz/ and they are not used in the other scripts of the Slavic languages.
The origin of some letters
- Lj= is the 15th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and represents the sound /ʎ/. The Cyrillic equivalency of this letter is Љ and the symbol Lj is borrowed from the Serbo-Croatian language.
- Nj= is the 18th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and represents the sound /ɲ/. On the Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet this letter is represented with the letter Њ and the symbol Nj is borrowed from the Serbo-Croatian language.
- Dz= is the 10th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and this letter represents the sound /dz/. The Cyrillic equivalency is the letter /Ѕ/. This letter is unique for the Macedonian alphabet and one of the main characteristics of the Macedonian phonetic system.
- Dž= is the 30th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and this letter represents the sound /dʒ/. The Cyrillic equivalency of this letter is Џ and the symbol Dž is also borrowed from the Serbo-Croatian language.
- Ḱ= is 24th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and represents the sound /kʲ/. With Cyrillic alphabet this sound is written with the symbol Ќ and this letter is closely related with the Serbian letter Ћ, but the difference is in the pronunciation, because the Macedonian letter Ḱ is very soft in comparison with the Serbian letter. The symbol and the sound Ḱ is unique for the Macedonian Language and this letter is also one of the main characteristics of the Macedonian phonetic system.
- Ǵ=is 6th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and represents the sound /gʲ/. With Cyrillic alphabet this sound is written with the symbol Ѓ and this letter is closely related with the Serbian letter Ђ, but the difference is in the pronunciation, because the Macedonian letter Ѓ is very soft in comparison with the Serbian letter. The symbol and the sound Ѓ is unique for the Macedonian Language and this letter is also one of the main characteristics of the Macedonian phonetic system.
- Č= 29th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and it represents the letter /tʃ/. The Cyrillic equivalency is Ч and this symbol is borrowed from the Serbo-Croatian language although this letter is used by many Slavic Languages.
- Š= 31th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and it represents the letter /ʃ/. The Cyrillic equivalent is Ш and this symbol is also borrowed from the Serbo-Croatian language although this letter is used by many Slavic Languages.
- Ž= 8th letter of the Macedonian alphabet and it represents the letter /ʒ/. The Cyrillic equivalent is Ж and this symbol is borrowed from the Serbo-Croatian language although this letter is used by many Slavic Languages.
