The Ebbw Valley Line is a railway line in South Wales. The line closed to passenger traffic on 30 April 1962[1], remaining open for freight services only.

The line is currently in the process of being restored to passenger service in a project developed and procured by Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly County Borough Councils, Newport City Council, the Welsh Assembly Government and Network Rail.[2] Capita Symonds are project managing the scheme[3] and the project contractor is Amey Rail. New stations and services wil be operated by Arriva Trains Wales, the existing train operating company in the region. The Local Authorities will own and operate the station car parks.

Services are due to commence in 2007 with an hourly passenger service from Ebbw Vale-Cardiff. Dedicated feeder bus services will link the line to Ebbw Vale and Abertillery town centres. Feeder buses will also operate to Newport Ciy Centre from Rogerstone Station.[4]

The works include upgrading the existing track to passenger standard, including reinstatement of 3 miles of double track, new colour light signalling, level crossing renewal and construction of six new stations.

It is intended that in the future under Phase II of the Scheme a second hourly service from Ebbw Vale-Newport will be introduced and the passing loop will be extended 7 miles for the Newport services. There are also proposals for additional intermediate stations at Cwm and Pye Corner, together with extensions of the railway line to Ebbw Vale Town Centre and Abertillery to replace the feeder bus services.[4] The Ebbw Vale extension forms part of the masterplan for the regeneration of the steelworks site with the station located close to the former works offices.[5] Future phases of the project are promoted by SEWTA.
