Serhii Makhno (Ukrainian: Сергій Михайлович Махно) is a Ukrainian architect, designer, and artist.[1] He is the founder of MAKHNO Studio. [2] His designs have been exhibited at Salone del Mobile in Milan [3][4], Paris Design Week [5], Dutch Design Week [6], Galerie 5 in Singapore [7][8], Gallery G-77 in Kyoto [9], and Les Ateliers Courbet Gallery in New York. [10][11]

Serhii Makhno is a jury member of the Dezeen Awards [12], International Architecture & Design Awards [13], Architecture MasterPrize [14], and others.

Early life and education

Serhii Makhno was born on May 21, 1981, in Kyiv into a family of workers. He has two younger brothers. He graduated from the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture with a degree in Architectural Environment Design.[15]

Career

After graduating in 2003, Serhii Makhno founded MAKHNO Studio, a multidisciplinary firm in architecture [16][17][18][19], interior design [20][21], and product design. [22]

Architecture & Design

The studio works in a style that combines Ukrainian authenticity [1], contemporary art, naturalness [23], and futurism. [24][25]

One of the main principles of the studio is to combine classical elements with modern ideas, using traditional crafts and techniques, but in a new context. [26][27][28][29][30]

During this time, MAKHNO Studio has won such global architectural awards as The Architecture MasterPrize [31][32][33], IIDA Awards [34][35], Restaurant & Bar Design Awards [36], SBID Awards [37], and others. In particular, the SHKRUB project won several prestigious architectural awards simultaneously in 2020 and 2021. [38][35][39][40]

Art

At the same time as the architecture and design studio, there is a ceramics workshop. Across mediums, Makhno’s work embodies the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic and philosophy. [41][2]

Serhii Makhno and his team create furniture, lighting, tiles, and decor. In 2017, he received the international Red Dot Design Award for his ceramic tiles [42], and in 2024 - for innovative blocks made of "live" clay [43][44]. Also, in 2021, the KHMARA ceramic lamp received the Grand Prix at the Big See Interior Design Awards [45] and an award from the Interior Design Magazine Awards [46].

In 2017, the studio presented the project "Transformation. Silence" at Paris Design Week [5] and the same year at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, the Netherlands [6]. In January 2019, the studio took part in Maison&Objet as part of the Ukrainian collective stand with the “Ukrsavana” project [47].

In 2019, Serhii and his studio presented the “Inside. Out” project at their 100-meter-long stand at iSaloni.Salone del Mobile.Milano. Euroluce. The composition of ceramic furniture and lamps was among the main trends of the exhibition according to ArchDaily [48].

In 2020, the MAKHNO Art Foundation was created to launch a new wave of Ukrainian art. [41]

In 2022, he released his first NFT collection of ceramic art, META DIDO. Digital tokens reimagine a series of ceramic zoomorphic sculptures created and released in 2019 under "Dido". [49]

In November 2023, ZEMLYA's handmade ceramic furniture and decor collection was exhibited at Les Ateliers Courbet in New York, USA. [50][41]
