Mihailo Mihaljević graduated from cadet school, and then served in the [[Petrovaradin]] regiment for several years with the rank of [[major]] and later [[colonel]] in the Austrian Army. Before the [[Austro-Turkish War (1788-1791)]], he became the commander of the Serbian Free Corps or better known as ''freikorps'' in [[Srem]], at the head of which he crossed the Sava in 1788 and cooperated with the Austrian forces in the capture of [[Šabac]]. In the operations of the Austrian army in 1789, with the frigate ''Stanko'', he ensured the attack on [[Belgrade]] via [[Danube]], and then took part in the occupation of [[Paraćin]], [[Jagodina]], [[Ćuprija]], [[Karanovac]], [[Kruševac]] and [[Aleksinac]]. Mihailo Mihaljević (1748 – April 26, 1794) was an Austrian major (later colonel) of Serbian origin who led the Serbian Free Corps during Austro-Turkish War (1788-1791).[1]
Biography
Mihailo Mihaljević graduated from cadet school, and then served in the Petrovaradin regiment for several years with the rank of major and later colonel in the Austrian Army.[2] Before the Austro-Turkish War (1788-1791), he became the commander of the Serbian Free Corps or better known as freikorps in Srem, at the head of which he crossed the Sava in 1788 and cooperated with the Austrian forces in the capture of Šabac. In the operations of the Austrian army in 1789, with the frigate Stanko, he ensured the attack on Belgrade via Danube, and then took part in the occupation of Paraćin, Jagodina, Ćuprija, Karanovac, Kruševac and Aleksinac. In 1792, he formed the Serbian and Slavonian Freikorps with which he participated in the French Revolutionary Wars and during that campaign he was killed on 26 April 1794.[3]
