Development

Quentin Tarantino has maintained that he seeks to retire from directing following the release of his tenth film, something he has dubbed " an epilogue" to his film directing career.[1] Since the production of his ninth film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino has stated that the following films have at one point been in consideration to be his final directed feature. In December 2017, it was announced that Tarantino had pitched an idea for a Star Trek film to Paramount.[2]

In June 2019, following the debut of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino was still involved in the development of the script.[3] By January 2020, the film was still in development, but Tarantino believed that he would no longer direct the film.[4] In August 2019, Tarantino said that a horror film could be his 10th and final movie, he said: "If I come up with a terrific horror film story, I will do that as my tenth movie. I love horror movies. I would love to do a horror film".[5][6] In June 2021, Tarantino stated that he had at one point considered remaking his 1992 directorial debut Reservoir Dogs as his tenth and final film, but quickly clarified that he "won't do it".[7] In June 2021, Tarantino revealed details to a potential sequel to Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Volume 2, a project that he has publicly discussed since 2004. His latest ideas of the project involve Uma Thurman and her daughter Maya Hawke playing the roles of the Bride and B.B. after 20 years of peace following the original films. He also noted the potential for characters such as Elle Driver, Sophie Fatale, and Gogo's twin sister Shiaki appearing.[1]

In March 2023, it was announced that Quentin Tarantino was set to direct and write what is billed as his final feature film, titled The Movie Critic, a period film set in 1970s Los Angeles. It was reported to have a female lead, with sources specilating that the story could potentially focus on film critic Pauline Kael. The film currently does not have a studio attached, but one of the frontrunners is Sony Pictures Releasing, who previously distributed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.[8][9] Later that month, Tarantino confirmed that the film would take place in 1977, and that the film would not be concerned with Kael.[10] In May 2023, Tarantino revealed that the movie would be inspired by a movie critic, whose name he did not reveal, for a pornographic magazine, which would be called the Popstar Pages in the film, and would be set in California. He noted that the lead actor would be around 35 years old and an American.[11] In September, it was reported that John Travolta and Kurt Russell were being considered for the film.[12][13] In December, it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson were offered lead roles in the film.[14]

In February 2024, Brad Pitt was cast in the film, as potentially the lead, as well as the title had been confirmed to be The Movie Critic.[15] Tom Cruise was in talks to join the film in a minor role or cameo appearance.[16]

Filming

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in late 2024 or early 2025 in Los Angeles.[17] It was previously scheduled to begin in September 2023, but was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[18][19][8]

Release

The Movie Critic is eyed to be released in the United States in 2025.[15]
