Sangamithra is an unfinished Tamil-language historical drama film directed by Sundar C, who co-wrote the screenplay with Subha (a duo), and produced by Thenandal Studio Limited. The film initially starred Shruti Haasan in the titular role, alongside Jayam Ravi, Arya, and Disha Patani.

Sundar was signed by the production house to direct their hundredth venture in mid 2016, with confirmation that July. Announced under the working title Brobdingnagian, several lead actors including Suriya and Vijay were making rounds of portraying in the lead role; until they were dismissed during the official announcement in May 2017. In addition to its official title, Sangamithra, the principal cast and principal crew of composer A. R. Rahman, cinematographer Tirru,[a] art director Sabu Cyril, visual effects supervisor R. C. Kamalakannan, and sound designer Resul Pookutty was revealed the same month. Touted to be made on a budget of 250 crore (US$30 million), it would be the most expensive film in the career of Sundar and the production house.

Due to unfinished script and delay of filming schedules, some of the artists opted out and concentrated on other projects. This led to the project getting shelved the year after. In the following years, numerous attempts of a revival was reportedly done by the director and others. Attempts with a few different cast and crew artists were also done. The attempts only resulted in failures. Given up, the remaining artists began working on other projects; including Sundar's Aranmanai 3 and 4 (respectively 2021 and 2024).

Development

On 5 June 2016, Murali Ramasamy, co-header of Sri Thenandal Films, announced that they were making a project with the scale of a huge film like Baahubali.[b] The director was yet to be finalised, with Sundar C. reportedly making rounds. Murali further stated that most technicians, including composer A. R. Rahman, cinematographer Tirru, production designer Sabu Cyril, and VFX artist R. C. Kamalakannan, were 'locked in' for the film. Soon after, Sundar's wife, Khushbu, announced through her X (formerly Twitter) account that the project would be helmed by Sundar.[2] Tentatively titled Brobdingnagian, the project was touted be a historical drama film made on a costly budget; even costlier than the 2.0 (2018), the most costliest Tamil film after Baahubali.[3] Suriya was in consideration to portray as the lead actor. By mid-June, discussions with the actor began.[4] Soon after, Khushbu and Suriya's co-worker stated the actor declined the role.[5] Referred to as India's costliest film by reporters, Sudeep Chatterjee was chosen to handle the cinematography in the following month.[6][7]

Casting

Suriya was reported act as the lead actor, but was declared as a rumour when Khushbu, the wife of Sundar, and Rajasekar Pandian, co-header of 2D Entertainment, spoke out about it.[8] The following August, Vijay had kindly denied portraying the lead role after the director stated he had needed 250 working days for the principal photography.[9] The same month, Sundar had met with Jayam Ravi and narrated the story which impressed the actor. In principal, Ravi had 'nodded' to act in the film but had not signed as he was trying to allocate days with this and other projects.[10]

Notes

  1. ^ Initially, Sudeep Chatterjee was announced as the cinematographer; however, he subsequently opted out and was replaced with Tirru.
  2. ^ Meaning it would be made with one of the highest budgets, as Baahubali was done the same at the time.
