Nicole Shanahan (born 1983/1984) is an American entrepreneur, attorney, and philanthropist. She gained prominence through her work in the legal and technology sectors and her marriage to Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google.

On March 16, 2024, Mediaite speculated that Shanahan would be the running mate[1] for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in his independent bid for the presidency. Mediaite reported that the domain kennedyshanahan.com was registered on March 13, 2024, and as a test, sent a small donation "through that donation page" and allegedly "discover the domain was registered by Kennedy senior advisor Link Lipsitz." The publication did not receive a response to their request for comment from a campaign spokesperson.

The Robert F. Kennedy Jr. campaign has not yet released the name of his running mate.[2] The vice presidential announcement event is scheduled for March 26, 2024 in Oakland, California.[3]

Early life and education

Shanahan grew up on welfare in Oakland with a father who suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Her mother was a Chinese immigrant who struggled to make ends meet before she became an accountant.[4]

Shanahan completed a bachelor's degree in Asian Studies, Economics, and Mandarin Chinese at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, and her juris doctor degree at Santa Clara University.[4]

Career

Shanahan began her career as a patent attorney, specializing in intellectual property law. She worked with various law firms before founding her own legal technology company, ClearAccessIP, in 2014. ClearAccessIP aimed to streamline the patent management process using cutting-edge technology.[5]

Shanahan has served as an executive producer of two films: Evolver in 2022 and Kiss The Ground in 2020.[6][7]

In September 2023, she received Santa Clara University School of Law's 2023 Young Alumni Rising Star Award, given to graduates who have distinguished themselves in law and demonstrated impact in the community through their service and commitment to the law.[8]

She is a founding partner of Harvard Computational Policy Lab.[9]

Philanthropy

Shanahan has been involved in various philanthropic endeavors. She supports initiatives focused on promoting women in technology and advancing scientific research.

In 2018, she helped fund and launch the world’s first Center for Female Reproductive Longevity and Equality through the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.[10]

In 2019, Shanahan announced $100 million in donations to programs that help women become pregnant later in life, programs that aim to overhaul the criminal justice system and climate change.[11]

In 2020, Shanahan was a "major donor" for Measure J, LA County's criminal justice reform.[12]

In 2022, she was ranked #6 on Philanthrophy.com's Top 50 donors. That year, she gave $70 million to Blue Meridian Partners, which makes grants to nonprofits to help poverty.[13]

In 2024, Shanahan reported that she donated $4 million to the Super PAC for the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 2024 presidential campaign to pay for a 30-second Super Bowl ad supporting the campaign.[14]

Personal life

Shanahan married Sergey Brin in 2018; they divorced in 2022.[4]

In 2022, media outlets reported reported Shanahan had an affair with Elon Musk.[15] Both Shanahan and Musk have denied the affair.[16]

In 2023, Shanahan "committed" to partner Jacob Strumwasser, vice president at Lightning Labs.[17]
