Buckshot Roulette is a 2023 short indie tabletop horror video game developed and published by Mike Klubnika on itch.io.[2] It is set for release on Steam on April 3, 2024, to coincide with a new update.[3] [non-primary source needed] The game has been likened to the 2021 roguelike game Inscryption,[4] featuring gritty and industrial visuals as opposed to Inscryption's more whimsical and fantasy style.[5] Klubnika developed the game in the Godot game engine,[1] and also composed the game's soundtrack.[citation needed]
Released on December 28, 2023, Buckshot Roulette became popular online in early 2024 and was praised by critics and players for its strategic gameplay, replay value, and prominence among video game streamers.
Gameplay
The game involves the player playing a game of Russian roulette in an underground nightclub with a mysterious entity known as "the Dealer" (an ai), with the use of a 12-gauge pump action shotgun instead of a revolver, which is traditionally used in Russian roulette.
The game consists of three rounds. At the start of each round, the Dealer loads the shotgun with a certain number of red live shells and blueish-green blank shells in a random order. The player then chooses to either shoot the Dealer or themselves; choosing the latter option with a blank in the chamber skips the Dealer's turn, and the player gets another turn. Both the Dealer and the player are given the same amount of defibrillator charges administered by a complex machine that is seen scattered around the room, starting with two charges on round 1, four on round 2, and five on round 3, of which will revive the player or Dealer when either are shot with a live shell. A round is won when the player depletes the Dealer's charges, and is lost if the Dealer depletes the player's. The player and the Dealer can respawn indefinitely during rounds 1 and 2, however the wiring of the defibrillator machine is cut when either party reaches their last charge during round 3, forcing the player to restart from the beginning if the round is lost. If the magazine is emptied and neither party has lost all their charges, the Dealer loads the shotgun again with another load of cartridges.[4][6][7]
On round 2 and beyond, the Dealer hands out items along with every new load of cartridges that give each party an advantage, giving two to each side during round 2, and four during round 3. The items are as follows:
- A magnifying glass, which allows the player to check the currently loaded shell before acting.
- A cigarette pack, which allows the player to restore one charge (doesn't work during round 3 when the wiring of the defibrillator machine is cut).
- A can of beer, which allows the player to rack a shell.
- A switchblade, which is used to cut the barrel of the shotgun for a single turn taking two charges if the shell is live.
- A pair of handcuffs, which the opponent has to wear, skipping their turn.
Update 1.1., released on January 12, 2024, added a new game mode known as "Double or Nothing" or popularly referred to as "Endless Mode". The game mode is accessed if the player takes optional pills at the beginning of the game. If taken, a random number of items are given on every round, along with a random number of charges, rather than the game's item and charge counts being determined. Upon beating the Dealer, the player is prompted to continue the game and double their earnings until they run out of charges, which will force the player to restart no matter the round they were on, or alternatively choose to leave with their money.[8][non-primary source needed]
Reception
Buckshot Roulette quickly gained popularity on Twitch and TikTok, which subsequently led to increased popularity on YouTube.[2][6][9] It has gained praise for its similarity to Inscryption, with multiple reviewers commending the strategic element introduced by the game's item system.[4][5][6]
