Mr. Maha Prasad Adhikari (Nepali: महा प्रसाद अधिकारी) is currently the 17th Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. He is the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Bank as per the provisions of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act 2002.[1] He was appointed as the Governor of the Bank by KP Oli led government on 6th April 2020.[2][3]. Before his appointment as Governor, he also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Board Nepal (IBN) for three years.[4]. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of IBN representing Nepal Rastra Bank.[5] He also worked as the deputy Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank for a period of five years.[6]

Education
Mr. Adhikari has completed chartered accountant accredited from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and is also a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN).
Career
Mr. Adhikari has a long career of more than thirty years in central banking working in different capacities at NRB. He has gained substantial expertise in areas such as the implementation of Accounting Standards in Nepalese Banks and Financial Institutions.
In his role as Deputy Governor of NRB, Adhikari had a pivotal role in shaping various financial sector policies and reform programs. His active involvement extended to areas like Problem Bank Resolution, Capital Adequacy Framework, Risk-Based Supervision, Early Warning Systems, and Prompt Corrective Actions. Notably, he took on the crucial responsibility of coordinating the management team of Nepal Bangladesh Bank Limited (later merged with Nabil Bank Limited) when it was declared problematic and contributed significantly to its successful turnaround.[13]
Mr. Adhikari has also served on the boards of several public sector institutions of the country, including Butwal Power Company Limited, Udayapur Cement Factory, Nepal Clearing House Limited, National Insurance Corporation, and Security Board of Nepal.
Other Activities
Currently, Mr. Adhikari is Ex-Officio Member of the Board of Governors at the International Monetary Fund.[14] He is a member of the Board of Governors of The South East Asian Central Banks Research and Training Centre (SEACEN centre) representing NRB.[15] He is also the executive member of Asia Pacific Rural and Agriculture credit association (APRACA).[16] He also served as a Member of the Board of Directors at the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) during 2020-23.[17] He also held the position of Vice Chair for the South Asia Region Financial Inclusion Initiative of AFI for the period 2022-23. Recently, he acted as the Chairman of SAARCFINANCE, an organization consisting of SAARC Central Bank Governors and Finance Secretaries, during the period 2021-22.
He was council member of Insitute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal in its 4th council during 2006-09. [18] He has actively participated as a member of various committees within ICAN and also contributed to the Committee for Improvement in Transparency, Accountability, and Governance (CITAG) of the South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA).
