Small World City is an online speculative fiction magazine based in Bangladesh.[1] It also features speculative poetry, non-fiction, art, and hybrid text in every issue, published four times a year.[2] The magazine features stories and poems centered around "the strange, the irreverent, the niche... the stories that eschew reality."[3]
Small World City is Bangladesh's first online literary magazines with a focus on the speculative genres.[4]
History
The magazine was founded by editor Mehrul Bari, deputy editor Shehrin Hossain, and communications director Farhia Tabassum. It was created originally as a means to increase and improve the country's literary scene along with the alternative subcultures developing within Dhaka's art scene.[4] Contributors for the first issue featured established writers, artists, and musicians from Bangladesh, such as Namira Hossain, Fahim Anzoom Rumman, Laisul Hoque, Rumman R. Kalam, and Kanna Dey, the Destroyer, among others. The second issue featured contributions from writers, poets, and artists both domestically and internationally, such as Marguerite Sheffer, Puer Deorum, Raian Abedin, Snata Basu, as well as an interview with London artist DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ, among others.
Reception
The first issue of Small World City was launched in August 2023. In his review of the issue, Aaqib Hasib of The Daily Star praised the magazine's fiction content: "Three out of the five stories I absolutely loved, and by the end, I found myself eagerly waiting to see what the SWC team brought for us next."[5] The magazine has also come to be known for its interactive website. Hasib, mentioning in his review as well, commented, "I have to say it is one of the best looking magazine websites I have seen in a long time. Be it in terms of design, the user interface or choice of visuals, the SWC website is top tier."
