The journey started, when Ashish Hemrajani, then an employee of [[J. Walter Thompson]] went on a backpacking holiday to South Africa.

During his trip while sitting under a tree, he heard a radio commercial promoting online tickets for a rugby game. This was the time when people in India stood in queues for hours to get movie tickets, sometimes missing the film due to unavailability of tickets. To add to that, there was no single unified platform where one could buy tickets for movies, events and plays.
During his trip, he heard a radio commercial promoting online tickets for a rugby game. The rugby commercial proved to be the ‘Eureka!’ moment for Ashish and he sensed potential in an online entertainment ticketing model in India, thereby solving a problem that millions of Indians faced standing in long queues for hours to buy movie tickets, sometimes unsuccessfully. Along with his college friends Parikshit Dar and Rajesh Balpande, Ashish then went on to create Big Tree Entertainment Pvt. BookMyShow is an Indian entertainment company, it is headquartered in Mumbai, owned and operated by Big Tree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. The  company is present in over 650 towns and cities in India and has global operations across UAE, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia. Founded by Ashish Hemrajani (also the CEO) along with his friends Parikshit Dar and Rajesh Balpande. the company has evolved from an online ticketing platform for movies across 6,000 screens, to end-to-end management of live entertainment events including music concerts, live performances, theatricals, sports and more over the years.

As of 2019, the company was reportedly valued at over $1 billion[2], making it the first and only entertainment company in India to touch the mark,  after having raised $100 million at a valuation of $850 million only one year ago in 2018[3].

With monthly page views at 5 billion an

d over 200 million customer visits each month[4], has also built the largest organic reviews and ratings engine for movies and has driven technology innovations, such as the m-ticket and movie mode.

History and Timeline

1999 - 2006

The journey started, when Ashish Hemrajani, then an employee of J. Walter Thompson went on a backpacking holiday to South Africa.

Ltd (parent company). an ode to the tree under which he was sitting when he got this idea[5].

In 2000, when multiplexes and large cinema chains started entertaining Indian audiences,   the company took the first steps towards digitising the movies entertainment ecosystem with a focus on software enterprise resource planning and a global distribution system for venues with a dedicated software.

However, the founders could not sustain the fledgling venture after the dotcom bust between 2001-2002. During this period,   the company scaled down its operations offering technology solutions that enabled customer relationship management and shrunk the overall team strength from 150 to 6 employees[6]. The next four years were spent in shaping back the team and the firm, re-building technology one step at a time.

2007 - 2016

In March 2007, Network18 (now owned by Reliance Industries Limited) invested in the company to launch India's first online entertainment ticketing aggregator platform. In an internal contest held to coin a name for the new company, a developer-intern came up with the name BookMyShow.com for the platform.

In 2010, It  became the official ticketing partner for various cricket teams of the Indian Premier League. The company has been associated with 10+ domestic leagues and franchises since then, most recent amongst them being Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders amongst others.

Along with partnering for several international sporting events like ICC Men's T20 World Cup (then ICC World Twenty20) in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka vs Australia series, Caribbean Premier League, the company  also became the exclusive ticketing partner for Formula 1, the Indian Grand Prix bringing their first race to India, in 2011.

All these events were postponed due to the COVID-19  pandemic that broke out in early 2020 across the world. New dates for these shows are yet to be announced.

During the pandemic, the company shifted from purely out-of-home entertainment to introduce virtual entertainment hosting events across genres (music, comedy, theatricals, sports and performance) and launched its streaming platform for live entertainment events called BookMyShow Online.[41] As per reports available, the company ticketed 80% of these events by the end of 2020.[42]

The cinema business in India was one of the hardest hit with theatres completely shutting down during the national lockdown and the company, along with its cinema partners, announced the launch of a product innovation which would let users see safety measures followed by each cinema outlet listed on the platform, before they could book their tickets.
