Launched in 2010, Street League Skateboarding (SLS) is an international competitive series in professional skateboarding. The league features twenty-four professional street skateboarders competing for the largest prize purse in the history of skateboarding,[1] and was founded by professional skateboarder and entrepreneur Rob Dyrdek.
History
The idea for SLS first arose when Dyrdek reviewed the state of professional street skateboarding competitions more than seven years ago and was unhappy with his conclusion. Dyrdek identified significant flaws in the way that skateboarding contests were designed and run, and therefore proceeded to develop the SLS concept.
The inaugural year of Street League featured a three-stop arena tour that began at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on August 28, 2010. The other venues for the inaugural tour were the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, on September 11, 2010, and the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on September 25, 2010.
In 2012, the champion Nyjah Huston won US$200,000, the championship Nixon watch and ring set from Nixon Watches, and a Chevy Sonic vehicle. As of May 19, 2013, Huston has won more prize money than any other skateboarder in history.[2]
In May 2013, the GoPro camera company was announced as the official camera sponsor of the 2013 SLS international tour. GoPro content will be featured in the broadcasts of the domestic American events, and the cameras will deliver footage of course previews and real-time impact highlights. GoPro sponsors SLS contestants Ryan Sheckler and Sean Malto.[3]
Paul Rodriguez won his second SLS stop in Portland, Oregon, U.S. on July 14, 2013.[4] The winner of the 2013 Street League Super Crown Championship, held in New Jersey, US, is Chris Cole, who was also the winner at the Munich, Germany stop. Cole was awarded US$200,000 after achieving high scores in the Impact Section that contributed to his victory. Huston and Luan Oliveira placed second and third respectively.[5]
Overview
The league consists of twenty-four of the world's top professional street skateboarders who complete against each other and accumulate championship points that designate rank throughout the season. The contestants accumulate points at each pre-championship stop and only the top eight ranking contestants move onto the championship event.
In 2010, SLS was described by cable television network ESPN as the "first-ever and only professional skateboarding league."[6] The Street League prize purse is the largest in the history of competitive professional skateboarding,[1] totaling US$1.6 million in 2011. Unique characteristics of the competition include the contest format, the ISX scoring system, the indoor concrete skate course (described as a "plaza"), and the amount of total prize money.
ISX technology
SLS introduced the ISX (Instant Scoring Experience) to competitive skateboarding events.[7] The unique scoring format scores each trick independently, in contrast to all other professional contests that grade on overall impression of a full run or series of tricks performed within a certain time frame.[8] ISX is a partnership between MXi, Dialsmith, and SLS.[7]
Course design and construction
California Skateparks designs and builds the Street League courses.[7]
ESPN partnership
Street League signed a multi-year partnership with ESPN for worldwide distribution of the contest footage in more than 198 countries.[citation needed]
