Star Citizen is an upcoming space trading and combat simulator video game for the PC. It consists of persistent world massively multiplayer, single-player campaign, and customizable private server components. Players take the role of spacefaring humans in a 30th century Milky Way centred around the fictional United Empire of Earth (UEE), an analogue to the Roman Empire. A central theme of the game is citizenship (or lack thereof) in the UEE. Players are not automatically granted citizenship, rather must earn it if they desire, and in-game opportunities are influenced by it. Strong focus is placed on player interaction.[4][5] The game is slated to enter alpha phase in Q4 2013.
Star Citizen is currently being developed by Chris Roberts' Cloud Imperium Games Corporation, founded in 2011.[6] Roberts' previous works include games such as Wing Commander,[7] Privateer[8] and Freelancer.
Development
The developers of the game started a crowdfunding campaign in October 2012 on both the project website[9] and Kickstarter.[10] Funding quickly surpassed initial target goals[11] and subsequently additional stretch goals have been added to the funding campaign, most promising more or expanded content at release.[12] The initial end date of the funding campaign on the RSI website was later extended by 10 days to match the Kickstarter end date, both to enable additional funding as well as a joint special event for the end of the crowdfunding campaigns.[11] On 17 November 2012 (two days before crowdfunding closure) the game achieved the record for highest crowd-funded game-project ever with over $4.2 million (210% of the initial funding goal).[13]
Although crowd funding has reached the cap "stretch goal" of 6 million, the crowd funding campaign still continues. The total funded by backers has reached $8,776,385 (project's website: $6,642,286, Kickstarter: $2,134,374) from 160,563 backers (project's website: 126,166, Kickstarter: 34,397) as of April 26, 2013.[14]
