Cologne:
What would the Rhineland be without this city? Cologne is a major commercial and industrial city of international standing, a key conference and trade fair location and a cultural, media and academic hub. Both the city and surrounding area are home to vehicle manufacturers such as Ford, Citroën and Toyota as well as chemicals company Lanxess. The Rhine metropolis is also the preferred location of numerous publishers, music labels and media companies such as RTL and WDR. The city's most famous landmark and centre is Cologne Cathedral, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Attractions include Romanesque churches such as St. Andreas, St. Aposteln and St. Martin, the Rheinauhafen district, the LVR Tower and museums such as Museum Ludwig, the Romano-Germanic Museum and the Chocolate Museum.
The traditions, hospitality and genuine zest for life of Cologne are best experienced in the medieval alleyways of the Old Town between the cathedral, the town hall and the Rhine promenade. The rustic breweries, restaurants and cafés offer a warm welcome to everybody. The Cologne Carnival, almost as old as the city itself, attracts crowds of visitors to the cathedral city during carnival season.
The Rhineland offers many gems to explore in the region surrounding Cologne, including the Siebengebirge nature park near Bonn, the Bergisches Land mountains and the Rhein-Erft region with its network of cycle and hiking trails and more than 50 castles and palaces to visit.
