From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeygʷ- (to stick, to plant).[1]

Cognate with Proto-Slavic *děgati, *dьgna, Proto-Germanic *dīkaz (pool, puddle), Latin fīgō (pierce, pin, fasten, fix).
