editFrom Middle High German schiune, from Old High German scugin(n)a, probably eventually from the root Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (“to cover, hide, cloud”). The word was originally chiefly East Central German versus otherwise predominant Scheuer (Austro-Bavarian also Stadel). Scheune is reinforced by cognate Low German Schüün.
