Etymology

Of debated origin. Either from Proto-Ugric *ϑᴕćɜ- (to become damp, get wet) or from Proto-Finno-Ugric *sᴕsɜ- (to become wet)[1][2][3] + -ik.

  1. (intransitive) to soak, steep (to be saturated with liquid by being immersed in it)
  2. (intransitive) to become soaking wet in the rain, to become rainsoaked
    Bőrig áztunk az esőben.We became soaking wet in the rain.
  3. (intransitive, figuratively) to be soaked (in/with something: -ban/-ben or -tól/-től)
    Könnytől ázott az arca.Her face was soaked with tears.
    A kardja vérben ázott.His sword was soaked in blood.
    Ruhánk verejtékben ázott.Our clothes were soaked with sweat.
