editMcKean began his career wearing the "balloon" style outside chest protector worn by all AL umpires at the time. In 1979, he switched to the inside protector and wore it with his red blazer in game 5 of the 1979 World Series, becoming the lone AL umpire to pair the red blazer with an inside protector in a World Series game. The AL returned to navy blue blazers beginning in 1980.[citation needed]
