The 2016 season was Negeri Sembilan's 93th year in their history and 5th season in Malaysia Premier League since it was first introduced in 2004. Also it was the third season in the Malaysia Premier League following relegation on 2013 season. Along with the league, the club also participated in the Malaysia FA Cup and the Malaysia Cup.[1]
Events
editOn 3 December 2015, Negeri Sembilan announced a new coach Gary Phillips to replace K. Devan who was fired recently. He used to be the head coach for the Sabah team. Gary Phillips is expected to make drastic changes to the Negeri Sembilan team with the inclusion of some former A-League players into the Negeri Sembilan team and achieve the promotion mission to tier 1 Malaysia Super League.[2][3]
In December 2015, the club signed several new players. Among them were Syed Adney[4], Mohd Afiq Azmi,[5] Mohd Nasriq Baharom and Khairul Anwar Shahrudin. The club also signed 4 import players from Australia including Andrew Nabbout, Taylor Regan, Alex Smith and Joel Chianese.[6]
Negeri Sembilan loaned two JDT players, Daniel Ting and Kevin Günter for the 2016 season.[7]
On 8 April 2016, the club won over PKNS F.C. in a league match with result of 4-3.[8]
On May 19, 2016, Negeri Sembilan stole the top spot in the Premier League when they beat UiTM 4-2 at home. Two goals for Negeri Sembilan were each contributed by Andrew Nabbout and Mohd Afiq Azmi, while two goals for UiTM were scored by Wan Khairil Azwa.[9]
On 16 October 2016, Negeri Sembilan won Agong Cup after defeated Perak 2-0.[10]

Knockout stage
editIn the knockout stage, teams played against each other over two legs on a home-and-away basis, except for the one-match final. The mechanism of the draws for each round was as follows:
- In the draw for the quarter final, the fourth group winners were seeded, and the fourth group runners-up were unseeded. The seeded teams were drawn against the unseeded teams, with the seeded teams hosting the second leg. Teams from the same group or the same association could not be drawn against each other.
- In the draws for the quarter-finals onwards, there were no seedings, and teams from the same group or the same association could be drawn against each other.
